Procedure of Maharudra Anushthan

Maharudra Anushthan is completed upon the chanting of either 11 recitations of Laghu Rudra or 121 recitations of Ekadashini Rudri. In this powerful ritual, eleven qualified priests (Acharyas) perform Rudri chanting continuously over eleven days. Due to its deeply spiritual and transformative nature, this Anushthan must be conducted strictly according to Vedic procedures by well-versed and experienced Acharyas.

The ritual begins with the complete purification of the venue. A Parthiva Shivling (Shivling made of mud or clay) is established facing the north, and the devotee or the main ritual performer should sit facing the east. The Anushthan commences with Ganesh Puja to remove all obstacles, followed by the installation of the sacred Kalash (water pot), after which the Rudra chanting begins.

During the chanting, the Shivling is anointed (Abhishek) with holy substances such as Ganga water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugarcane juice, accompanied by powerful Vedic mantras. Following this, Lord Shiva’s Aarti is performed, marking the nearing conclusion of the Puja.

Essential Materials for Maharudra Anushthan

For Abhishek: Ganga water or purified water, raw milk, curd, pure ghee, honey, sugar, Belpatra (Bilva leaves), Kusha (a special type of sacred grass), sandalwood (powder or paste), white clothes or Rudraksha mala.  

For Havan: Mango wood, ghee, black sesame seeds, white sesame seeds, rice, jaggery, camphor, cloves, cardamom, Panchmeva (dry fruits), coconut.  

For Puja and other rituals: Idol or Shivling of Lord Shiva, Rudraksha mala, Panchamrit (mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), incense, agarbatti, lamp (sesame oil or ghee lamp), flower garland and fresh flowers, fruits and sweets (for Naivedya), Kalash (for water), betel nut, betel leaves, roli, mauli and akshat (rice), bhasma (vibhuti), mantra book (for Rudra Path).
