The Story of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

Long ago, there was a huge and dense forest located near the western seacoast. A demoness named Daruka and her husband Daruk lived there.

This forest was extraordinary because Goddess Parvati had granted Daruka a boon through which she could move the entire forest wherever she wished.

After receiving the boon, Daruka and Daruk became extremely arrogant and began:

• Torturing innocent people

• Destroying Yajnas and sacred rituals

• Disturbing sages and religious practices

Their cruelty spread fear and chaos throughout the region.

Why Did Sage Aurva Curse the Demons?

The suffering people approached Sage Aurva and prayed for protection from the demons.

Sage Aurva then cursed Daruk and Daruka, declaring:

“If these demons commit violence on Earth or obstruct righteous activities, yajnas, or sacred rituals, they will instantly perish.”

Hearing this curse, the demons became terrified.

Why Did Daruka Move the Entire Forest into the Ocean?

After Sage Aurva’s curse, the gods attacked the demons.

To escape destruction, Daruka used Goddess Parvati’s boon and shifted the entire forest into the depths of the ocean.

The demons began living underwater, but they continued to trouble innocent people.

Who Was Supriya Vaishya?

One day, several boats carrying travelers arrived in the sea region. The demons captured all the people and imprisoned them.

Among the captives was a merchant named Supriya, who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

Supriya:

• Never ate food without worshipping Lord Shiva

• Inspired others toward Shiva devotion

• Continued chanting Shiva mantras even during extreme hardship

How Did Lord Shiva Appear as Nageshwar?

When Daruk learned about Supriya’s devotion to Lord Shiva, he threatened to kill him.

But Supriya remained fearless and prayed:

“O Mahadev, you alone are my protector. Please save me.”

Moved by Supriya’s deep devotion, Lord Shiva emerged from a divine opening in the earth.

Along with Him:

• A magnificent temple appeared

• A radiant Jyotirlinga manifested

• The divine Shiva family also appeared there

Lord Shiva used the mighty Pashupatastra to destroy Daruk and his demon army, thereby protecting His devotee, Supriya.

What Boon Did Goddess Parvati Grant to Daruka?

After the destruction of the demons, Daruka sincerely prayed to Goddess Parvati.

Pleased by her prayer, Goddess Parvati granted protection to her lineage.

Thereafter, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to reside permanently in that forest.

From that moment:

• Lord Shiva became famous as “Nageshwar”

• Goddess Parvati became known as “Nageshwari”
