Engagement Muhurat

In Indian Hindu traditions, marriage (wedding) is not just between two individuals, but the union of two families and their fortunes. The beginning of this sacred bond is 'Sagai' (Engagement), which is considered a symbol of commitment.
This auspicious Engagement Muhurat (Shubh Sagai Muhurat) is an auspicious time given after calculation by an astrologer, determined based on favourable positions of the planets and constellations. An engagement performed at the correct Muhurat fills the coming married life with good fortune, prosperity, and love.

Sagai Muhurat is formed from two words: 'Sagai' (which means commitment or engagement) and 'Muhurat' (which means auspicious time). In simple terms, Sagai Muhurat is that astrologically determined time which is considered most favorable to complete the engagement ritual.

In Hindu astrology (Jyotish), every action has a specific time to begin called the 'Auspicious Time'. The belief behind selecting the Hindu Sagai Muhurat is that if an action is started under the positive influence of planets and constellations, its chance of success increases and the obstacles that occur are reduced. This Engagement Muhurat is calculated on the basis of the five limbs (Panchang) — Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karan.

Engagement (Sagai) is the most important ritual before marriage in which two people (and their families) accept one another and begin wedding preparations. The importance of Sagai Muhurat is understood for several reasons:

• Astrological Purity: The correct Sagai Muhurat is given by astrology after seeing the auspicious influence of the Navagrahas (nine planets) and the 27 Nakshatras. This ensures that no obstacle, illness, or crisis enters the couple's life.
• Strengthening Relationships: It is believed that an engagement performed in a Shubh Sagai Muhurat makes the future relationship stronger and more committed. This maintains trust, compromise, and affection in relationships.
• Marital Bliss: Among Engagement Muhurat benefits, the greatest benefit is the wish for happiness and peace in married life. It is believed that with the blessings of the planets, married life becomes problem-free and ideal.
• Freedom from Obstacles: The significance of Sagai Muhurat is considerable in removing delays, disputes, or any other kind of obstruction in marriage. A ritual performed after finding the correct Muhurat makes the journey to marriage easier.

To find the Best Sagai Muhurat or Shubh Engagement Muhurat, the Panchang is consulted. If you want to find the Auspicious Time for Sagai yourself, pay attention to these facts:

Tithi means the lunar dates of the two halves of the month. For auspicious works like engagement, these dates are considered superior:

• Dwitiya (2)
• Tritiya (3)
• Panchami (5)
• Saptami (7)
• Dashami (10)
• Ekadashi (11)
• Trayodashi (13)
• Chaturthi (4), Navami (9), and Chaturdashi (14) are considered inauspicious and should be avoided.

Some days of the week are very auspicious for engagement:

• Monday: The day of the Moon brings love and good fortune.
• Wednesday: The day of Ganesha gives intellect and success. (Avoid if Mercury is debilitated.)
• Thursday: The day of the divine teacher Jupiter gives knowledge and prosperity.
• Friday: The day of Venus, associated with love, luxury, and marital happiness.

It is generally advised to avoid Tuesday and Sunday, unless other auspicious yogas are available.

Among the 27 Nakshatras, some constellations are best for engagement and marriage-related works:

• Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.

Some astrological yogas like Amrita Yoga and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga further increase the significance of a Shubh Engagement Muhurat. It is necessary to avoid inauspicious times like Bhadra, Rahu Kaal, and Panchak in the Muhurat for Sagai.

A Jyotishacharya does not look only at these five limbs but also examines the positions of Jupiter and Venus in both bride and groom's kundalis (birth charts) and the strength (Bal) of the Moon, to determine the Best Sagai Muhurat.

It is important to know in detail the Engagement Ceremony Method or Sagai Muhurat Vidhi performed at a Shubh Sagai Muhurat. The Sagai Vidhi (ritual) includes the following steps:

First, both families (boy and girl) obtain the Sagai Muhurat from a reliable astrologer. The Sagai Muhurat Vidhi begins with selecting this auspicious hour and auspicious date. At the same time the venue and invitations are decided.

Before the engagement ritual begins, Ganesh Puja and Kalash Sthapana are performed. Lord Ganesha is considered the remover of obstacles. Seeking his blessings is essential to make the engagement ritual successful. After this, Navagraha (Nine Planets) worship is also performed so that all planets have a positive influence on the couple.

In the Sagai Vidhi, first the boy's mother or sister applies tilak on the girl, which symbolizes that they have accepted this relationship. After this, gifts, clothes, sweets, and fruits are exchanged.

This is the most prominent part of the Engagement Ceremony Method. At the exact determined time of the Shubh Sagai Muhurat, the boy and girl put rings on each other. The ring is considered a symbol of love, trust, and eternal bond. Once the ring is worn, the relationship is confirmed.

After the ring ritual, all present elders give blessings to the couple and wish them a prosperous future. After this, a feast is arranged in which all relatives and guests participate.

Sagai Muhurat benefits are not limited to the ritual but also have long-term and spiritual benefits. The main benefits of selecting the correct Shubh Muhurat for engagement are:

In the calculation of Hindu sagai muhurat (engagement auspicious time), the movement of the Moon and the Sun, along with the rising or setting of Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra), plays a crucial role. The auspicious months for engagement are classified according to the seasons, making it easier to understand the availability of favourable sagai muhurats.

At the beginning of the year, the status of Hindu sagai muhurat remains mixed. In January (Pausha/Magha month), due to Kharmas, very few sagai muhurats are available, and Pausha month is considered inauspicious. However, in February (Magha/Phalguna) and March (Phalguna/Chaitra), moderately auspicious muhurats start appearing. The Phalguna month is generally favourable, provided that Jupiter and Venus are not combust. During the Chaitra month, the number of auspicious muhurats again becomes limited.

The summer season is regarded as the most favourable time for engagement muhurats. In April (Chaitra/Vaishakha), with the beginning of Vaishakha month, the number of sagai muhurats increases significantly, making it an extremely auspicious period. Similarly, May (Vaishakha/Jyeshtha) also provides several excellent muhurats for engagements. In June (Jyeshtha/Ashadha), moderately auspicious muhurats may be available until the start of Ashadha month, after which auspiciousness gradually decreases.

The months of July (Ashadha/Shravana), August (Shravana/Bhadrapada), and September (Bhadrapada/Ashwin) fall under Chaturmas. During Chaturmas—which begins from Devshayani Ekadashi—engagements and all other auspicious ceremonies are strictly prohibited. This period is avoided because Lord Vishnu is believed to be in Yoganidra (divine slumber), and divine blessings are not fully active. Additionally, Pitra Paksha, which usually falls in September, is also considered inauspicious for engagements.

With the end of Chaturmas (on Dev Uthani Ekadashi), the sagai muhurats resume. In November (Kartika/Margashirsha), the Margashirsha (Agahan) month brings highly favourable muhurats for engagements. In December (Margashirsha/Pausha), good muhurats are also available; however, it is advised to complete the engagement ceremonies before the onset of Pausha month (which begins in January).

In addition to the above Sagai Muhurat 2025 list, here are some general rules regarding Auspicious Time for Sagai and Sagai Muhurat Month:

• Best Months: Kartik, Margashirsha, Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, and Jyeshtha. Sagai Muhurat from January to June is generally considered auspicious, and then again in November and December.
• Avoidable Months: Ashadha, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, and Paush (Chaturmas period) should generally be avoided for engagement.
• Auspicious Tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi.
• Auspicious Days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
