Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
Importance of Putrada Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month
Yudhishthira asked Lord Sri Krishna, "What is the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the month of Shravan? Please describe it to me."
Fast story of Putrada Ekadashi
Lord Sri Krishna replied, "O King! In ancient times, at the beginning of the Dwapara Yuga, there was a king named Mahijit who ruled in the city of Mahishmati. However, he had no sons, so his kingdom did not bring him happiness. As he grew older, the king became very worried. Sitting among his subjects, he said, "People! In this lifetime, I have committed no sins. I have not accumulated unjustly earned wealth in my treasury. I have never taken the wealth of Brahmins and gods. I have raised my subjects like my own sons, established authority on Earth through righteousness, and punished the wrongdoers, treating them like relatives and sons. I have always honored virtuous individuals and considered no one worthy of my enmity. So, why is it that no son has been born in my house until today? Please contemplate on this. Upon hearing the king's words, the people, along with the priests and Brahmins, entered deep forests to contemplate on his welfare. Those who desired the king's well-being wandered in search of hermitages revered by sages. During this quest, they encountered the eminent sage Lomash, who possessed deep knowledge of dharma and was well-versed in all scriptures. Lomash was long-lived and of great virtue, his body filled with light. He radiated brilliance akin to Brahma. Each of his hairs fell apart and broke upon falling down; hence, he was named Lomash. The great sage Lomash, who is knowledgeable about past, present, and future, was joyously welcomed by everyone upon their encounter. Approaching them, Lomash inquired, "Why have you all come here? Tell me the reason for your arrival. Whatever beneficial deed is to be done for you all, I will certainly fulfill it." The people replied, "O Brahmin! At this time, there is a king named Mahijit who has no son. We are his subjects, whom he has nurtured like his own children. Seeing his sorrow due to the absence of a son, we have resolved to undertake penance here, deeply affected by his anguish. O divine one! It is by the king's fortune that we have now had the opportunity to see you. The sight of great souls alone is enough to fulfill all the tasks of humans. Upon hearing the sage's request, Maharishi Lomash immersed himself in deep meditation for two minutes. Afterward, upon learning about the king's past lives, he said, "People, listen! King Mahijit was a poor merchant in his previous life, wandering from village to village engaging in trade. One day, on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha, when the sun was scorching at noon, he reached a pond at the outskirts of a village. Upon seeing the well filled with water, the merchant considered drinking from it. Just then, a cow arrived at the pond along with her calf. The cow was distressed by thirst and the heat of the sun; therefore, she began to drink water from the pond. The merchant pushed the drinking cow away and drank the water himself. It is due to this sinful act that the king is currently without a son. Through the merits of some past life, he has attained this unparalleled kingdom. The people said, "Sage! It is said in the scriptures that sins can be eradicated through atonement and virtue. Therefore, please advise us on the virtue that can destroy this sin. Lomash replied, "People! There is an Ekadashi in the bright fortnight of the month of Shravan, famous as 'Putrada Ekadashi.' It is renowned for granting desired outcomes, including the boon of a son.
