The Story of Somnath Jyotirlinga: Origin and Glory of the First Jyotirlinga

What is Somnath Jyotirlinga?

According to the Puranas, Somnath Jyotirlinga is considered the first among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is located in the sacred Prabhas region of Gujarat. Religious beliefs say that Lord Shiva appeared here in the form of “Someshwar.”

Somnath Jyotirlinga is not just a holy temple. It is also connected with devotion, penance, and the story of Chandra Dev’s freedom from a curse.

The Story of the First Jyotirlinga – Somnath

Sut Ji told the sages that Prajapati Daksha married his 27 daughters to Chandra Dev, the Moon God. After marriage, all the daughters were happy, and Chandra Dev also lived happily with them.

But among all his wives, Chandra Dev loved Rohini the most. This made the other wives sad, and they told their father Daksha Prajapati about their pain.

Daksha Prajapati’s Curse

Daksha Prajapati advised Chandra Dev to treat all his wives equally. But Chandra Dev did not listen and continued giving more attention to Rohini.

Angered by this behavior, Daksha Prajapati cursed Chandra Dev with a serious disease. After the curse, Chandra Dev became very weak, and worry spread across the three worlds.

The Gods Ask Lord Brahma for Help

Seeing Chandra Dev’s condition, Indra, other gods, and sages like Vashishta went to Lord Brahma for guidance.

Lord Brahma advised Chandra Dev to go to Prabhas Kshetra and worship Lord Shiva by chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. He said that only Lord Shiva could free Chandra Dev from the curse.

Chandra Dev’s Mahamrityunjaya Penance

Following this advice, Chandra Dev reached Prabhas Kshetra and began deep penance for Lord Shiva. For six months, he continuously chanted the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and prayed with full devotion.

Pleased with his devotion and penance, Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him to make a wish.

Chandra Dev prayed for freedom from the disease and asked forgiveness for his mistakes.

How Did Lord Shiva Bless Chandra Dev?

Lord Shiva blessed Chandra Dev by saying that during one phase of the month his glow would slowly decrease, and during the other phase it would grow again. This is believed to be the reason behind the waxing and waning of the Moon.

After this, Lord Shiva stayed there in the form of “Someshwar,” and the place became famous as Somnath Jyotirlinga.

Importance of Prabhas Kshetra and Somkund

Prabhas Kshetra is considered a very sacred place in Hinduism. It is believed that the gods established Somkund there, where Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma are spiritually present.

Chandrakund is known as a holy place that removes sins. People believe that bathing there with faith helps reduce sins and brings relief from serious diseases.
