Shat chandi Yagya

Shat Chandi Yagya is an extremely influential Vedic Anushthan (Ritual) performed for the worship of the Chandi form of Goddess Durga. In this sacred yajna, the divine verses of the Durga Saptashati are recited, and the Goddess is worshipped through the sacred fire offerings (havan). The Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmyam, is an important part of the Markandeya Purana. It consists of 700 Sanskrit verses that describe the valour of the Goddess and her victories over demons like Mahishasura.

According to tradition, when the recitation of the Saptashati is performed one hundred times, it is called the Shata Chandi Mahayajna. This is not merely a ritual, but a deep spiritual practice that connects the devotee with the infinite power and grace of the Divine Mother.

The Shat chandi Yagya is a unique and elaborate ceremony that usually takes several days to complete. In classical tradition, this yajna—comprising one hundred recitations—is generally accomplished in 11 days, concluding with Havan and poornahuti (final offering). In modern times too, it is performed in varying durations of 9, 11, or more days, depending on the tradition and arrangement.

The primary purpose of this great yajna is to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga, to pray for the welfare of the devotees, and to invoke collective peace and harmony.

Mythological Story and Significance

In ancient times, whenever someone needed extraordinary power or divine blessings, even sages, seers, and deities would resort to performing the Chandi Yajna. According to mythological accounts, when the gods were tormented by the tyranny of demons, they worshipped the Adi Shakti. Pleased with their devotion, Mother Mahakali manifested and destroyed the demons.

Throughout history, this yajna has held a place of great importance. Many kings performed it to attain victory in battles, ensure the prosperity of their kingdoms, and seek relief from crises. Even today, at major Shakti Peethas such as Vaishno Devi, the nine-day Shat chandi Yagya is organized during Navratri, where thousands of devotees from across India and abroad participate with deep faith. To conquer difficult challenges in life, seekers also organize the recitation of the Aparajita Stotram along with this Yagya, which is infallible in removing enemy obstacles.

The Shat chandi Yagya is an extremely sacred and ritualistic ceremony, usually conducted under the guidance of qualified and experienced priests. Its main process can be understood in the following stages:

1. Purification of the Venue and Mandap Setup

• The yajna site is chosen in a peaceful, sacred, and auspicious environment.

• The havan kund (sacred fire pit) is purified using cow dung, Ganga water, and kusha grass.

• Special ritual diagrams (mandalas) such as Sarvato Bhadra, Navagraha, Vastu, and Shodashmatrika are created, and deities are invoked at each of them.

2. Initial Worship and Kumari Puja

• Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles and seek blessings.

• Kalash Sthapana (installation of sacred pots) is performed, invoking holy rivers and pilgrimage sites.

• Worship of 9 Kumari girls is performed, recognizing them as forms of Navadurga, which is a special aspect of the ritual.

• Shodashopachara Puja (sixteen-step worship) of Goddess Durga and worship of the peethasth deities are carried out.

3. Recitation of Durga Saptashati and Havan

• The sacred Navarna Mantra “Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche” is chanted to sanctify the environment.

• Verses including Devi Kavach, Argala Stotra, Keelakam, and the thirteen chapters of the Saptashati are recited according to the proper ritual method.

• Traditionally, the Saptashati is recited 100 or 108 times, with offerings (ahuti) made into the havan after each verse.

• One-tenth of the recitation is performed as havan, tarpan (libations), Marjan (purification), and Brahmin meals.

4. Poornahuti and Conclusion

• In the final offering, ghee, nine grains, fruits, coconuts, and other sacred items are offered to complete the yajna.

• The Goddess’s idol and kalash are immersed, followed by aarti and distribution of Maha prasad.

• The ceremony concludes with Kanya Bhoj and Brahmin meals, through which the devotees receive divine blessings.

The Shat chandi Yagya is a multi-day ritual performed with meticulous procedures. Each stage requires precise chanting of mantras, adherence to Vedic rules, and deep devotion, which ensures that the devotee receives the complete blessings of Goddess Chandi.
