Important Questions Related to the Story of Narada Jayanti

Many Puranic stories associated with the life of Devarshi Narada are traditionally followed. Stories related to Narada Ji's birth, Brahma Ji's curse, his previous birth and attainment of Brahma Jnana are considered significant in religious literature.

Before reading the detailed story of Narada Ji, several questions naturally arise:

• How was Narada Ji born?

• Why did Brahma Ji curse Narada Ji?

• Why is the worship of Brahma Ji less common?

• Was Narada Ji married?

• If Narada Ji was married, what was the name of his wife?

• How did Narada Ji attain Brahma Jnana?

The answers to these questions are found in the detailed Puranic stories associated with Narada Ji.

The Birth Story of Narada Ji

This was a time when Brahma Ji and Goddess Savitri were engaged in the creation of the universe.

Four princes emerged from the mind of Brahma Ji. The first was Sanaka, the second Sanandana, the third Sanatana and the fourth was Sanatkumara, regarded as the foremost among the wise.

After this, a radiant prince, shining like gold, emerged from the mouth of Brahma Ji. His name was Swayambhuva Manu, and his wife was Shatarupa, who was exceptionally beautiful.

Brahma Ji happily instructed all his sons to participate in the creation of the universe. However, all of them were devoted to Shri Krishna and did not wish to become bound by worldly attachments. Therefore, they refused to participate in creation and left to perform Tapasya.

Brahma Ji became extremely angry. He then created the Saptarishis. Among them, the appearance of Narada Ji from Brahma Ji's throat is described in the tradition.

The Creator instructed these sons to participate in the creation of the universe. Hearing his father's words, Narada Ji said:

Narada said: “O Pitamah! First call your elder sons, Sanaka, Sanandana and the others, and have them marry. Then ask us to do the same. O Father! When you have directed them towards Tapasya, why are you trying to bind only us in worldly life? How unfortunate that your mind is turning towards such contrary thoughts.

Father! You have given some of your sons the path of Tapasya, which is more precious than nectar, while you are giving others worldly pleasures that are more poisonous than poison itself.

Who but a foolish person would abandon the service of Shri Krishna, which is dearer than nectar, and instead taste the terrible poison known as worldly pleasures? Worldly pleasures are temporary, insignificant, illusory and destructive like a dream.”

After saying these words before Brahma Ji, Narada Ji became silent.

Hearing this, Brahma Ji became extremely angry. His face turned red and his lips trembled. He cursed his son:

Brahma Ji said: “Narada! Because of my curse, you will lose your knowledge. You will become a plaything for women. You will become the husband of fifty women and will become famous by the name 'Upabarhana'.

After enjoying life with those women for many ages, you will be born as the son of a maidservant because of my curse. My son, later, through the association of Vaishnavas and by consuming their Prasad, you will once again receive the grace of Shri Krishna and become established as my son. At that time, I will again grant you divine and ancient knowledge.”

After hearing the curse, Narada Ji said: “You have cursed me without reason. Therefore, it would not be improper for me to curse you as well.

Because of my curse, your Mantras, along with their Kavacha, Stotra and worship, will disappear from the worlds. Father! Until three Kalpas have passed, you will remain without worship in the three worlds.”

Thus, according to the Puranic story, Prajapati Brahma became less worshipped as a result of the curse given to Him by His son Narada.

Narada Ji's Form as Upabarhana

According to the curse, Narada Ji was born as the son of the king of the Gandharvas and was named Upabarhana.

He is described as extremely handsome and attractive. He married 50 women and lived with them for many ages.

One day, he went to the abode of Brahma Ji and began singing the glories of Shri Hari. When he saw an Apsara named Rambha dancing there, desire arose in Upabarhana's mind and he became distracted.

He was greatly ridiculed for this, and Brahma Ji cursed him, saying:

“Give up this Gandharva body and take birth in the Shudra Yoni. In due course, you will once again become established as my son.”

Because of Brahma Ji's curse, Upabarhana gave up his body through Yogic meditation.

Seeing this, his beloved chief queen Malavati approached him, embraced him and began to mourn. While crying, she pleaded with Brahma Ji to restore her husband's life.

While saying this, she fainted.

After regaining consciousness, she began praising her husband's virtues and, in anger, prepared to curse all the Devas.

To protect themselves from the danger of her curse, all the Devas sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Shri Hari then assumed the form of a Brahmin and brought her husband Upabarhana back to life.

After this, the two remained together for many Kalpas.

Narada Ji's Birth as the Son of a Maidservant

When the time came, the learned Gandharva Upabarhana gave up his life because of Brahma Ji's curse and was born from the womb of Kalavati, the wife of Goparaj Drumila.

Goparaj went to Badrikashram and gave up his body through Yogic power before travelling to Vaikuntha in a celestial aircraft.

Kalavati was overcome with grief. Seeing her in sorrow, a compassionate Brahmin addressed her as mother and took her to his home.

The virtuous Kalavati gave birth to a noble son in the Brahmin's house and named him Narada.

The Brahmin raised both Kalavati and her son as members of his own family.

Meanwhile, several highly radiant Brahmins, who appeared to be five-year-old children, arrived at the Brahmin's home.

The householder Brahmin offered them water and refreshments and served them food including Kand-Mool and fruits.

The child ate the food left by them. Among the Brahmins, the fourth Brahmin gave the child Narada a Mantra for chanting the name of Shri Hari.

One day, while Kalavati was travelling along a road, she was bitten by a snake. Chanting the name of Shri Hari, she gave up her body and travelled to Vaikuntha in a celestial aircraft.

After this, Narada Ji began chanting the name of Shri Hari under a tree. Suddenly, he received a glimpse of Shri Hari.

After seeing this, he repeatedly tried to focus his mind on Shri Hari, but he could not receive His Darshan again.

He began crying while sitting there.

As he wept, a divine voice from the heavens said:

“O child! You will not receive Darshan of Shri Hari in this body.”

Hearing this, the child became peaceful and devoted himself to meditation upon Shri Hari. Later, he willingly gave up his body.

Thus, according to the Puranic story, Brahma Ji's curse was fulfilled, and Narada Ji attained Brahma Jnana.

Many other stories associated with Narada Ji are also found in religious literature. Narada Ji holds an important place in the traditions of the Ramayana, Puranas and Ramcharitmanas.

Why Did Brahma Ji Curse Narada Ji?

According to the Puranic story, Brahma Ji asked Narada Ji to assist in the creation of the universe and adopt a householder's life. Instead of becoming involved in worldly matters, Narada Ji considered devotion to Shri Krishna and Tapasya superior.

Brahma Ji became angry at Narada Ji's words and cursed him. The story also describes Narada Ji subsequently cursing Brahma Ji.

This episode should be understood as a Puranic religious story rather than a historical event.

Was Narada Ji Married?

According to the Puranic story, Narada Ji's previous form as Upabarhana is described as having been married to 50 women.

The same story goes on to describe his rebirth under the influence of the curse and his eventual attainment of Brahma Jnana in the form of Narada.

Therefore, the answer to the question “Was Narada Ji married?” depends on the context of the story. The well-known form of Devarshi Narada is primarily regarded as a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and a celibate sage, while the story associated with the Brahma Vaivarta Purana describes a separate episode involving his form as Upabarhana.

How Did Narada Ji Attain Brahma Jnana?

According to the Puranic story, in his previous birth, Narada Ji served saints and Brahmins and chanted the Shri Hari Mantra given to him by them.

He then meditated upon Lord Shri Hari and continuously remembered His name. He received the divine Darshan of the Lord, and through a divine voice, he received guidance regarding his further spiritual journey.

According to the story, after giving up his body, Narada Ji attained a divine form and became established as a supreme devotee of the Lord.
