Why Is Ram Navami Celebrated?

Ram Navami is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Shri Ram. According to religious beliefs, when the Earth and the gods were suffering from the atrocities of Ravana and other demons, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Shri Ram, the son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, to establish Dharma and destroy Adharma.

For this reason, Ram Navami is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm as the birth festival of Lord Shri Ram.

Let Us Know How Lord Shri Ram Was Born

When Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana, the three brothers, performed intense penance, Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva were greatly pleased by their severe austerities. They appeared before them and spoke in a gentle voice, saying, "I am pleased with your penance. Ask for a boon."

Ravana respectfully requested, "O Creator, grant me the boon that I may not be killed by anyone except humans and monkeys." Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma said, "So be it." Ravana was extremely pleased after receiving the boon. He became arrogant, believing that humans and monkeys could never possess strength equal to his and that he would remain invincible.

After this, the demons began spreading terror across the Earth. They were all capable of using various forms of illusion. They were extremely cruel and caused suffering to human beings. Compassion and Dharma were completely absent from their conduct.

Once, Ravana looked at his vast family and became very pleased. He then told all the demon armies, "The gods are our enemies. They do not come forward to fight us because they do not have enough strength and therefore flee. There is only one way to weaken them. The strength of the gods increases through religious activities. All of you should go and create obstacles in Brahmin feasts, Yajnas, Havan, religious rituals and Shraddha ceremonies. When the gods become weak due to hunger, they will certainly come to us. Then I will either kill them or bring them under my control."

When Ravana moved, the Earth was said to tremble, and his roar caused the gods to take shelter in the caves of Mount Sumeru. In this way, he brought the entire world under his control. Because of his power, the demons began causing great disturbances on Earth. Religious activities came to a halt. Whenever they found Brahmins, they would set their towns and villages on fire. At that time, no one respected Gurus or Brahmins. There was no devotion to Lord Hari, no Yajna, no penance and no knowledge. The Vedas and Puranas could not even be heard of. The demons were committing great atrocities.

When the Earth saw that Dharma had been overturned, she became deeply distressed. However, she was afraid of Ravana and could not speak openly. After much thought, the Earth assumed the form of a cow and went to the place where all the gods had taken shelter. There, she wept and described her suffering. However, no one had enough power to fight Ravana.

All the gods then went to Lord Brahma. The Earth, in the form of a cow, also accompanied the distressed gods. They told Lord Brahma everything that had happened. Lord Brahma then said to the Earth, "There is nothing within my power to do. Now only the eternal Supreme Being, whose servant you are, can come to your aid."

Everyone then began praising Lord Shri Hari. Seeing the gods and the Earth frightened and hearing their loving prayers, a profound divine voice echoed through the sky, removing their sorrow and doubts:

"O Gods, do not be afraid. For the welfare of all of you, I will take human form. I will incarnate, along with my divine aspects, in the sacred Solar Dynasty. Because of their great penance, I have already granted a boon to Kashyapa and Aditi.

They have now appeared as King Dasharatha and Kaushalya, the royal parents of Ayodhya. I will be born in the house of Dasharatha as one of four brothers in the Raghu dynasty and will relieve the Earth of her burden. Therefore, become fearless."

After hearing this divine proclamation, everyone's heart became peaceful. The gods then returned to their respective realms.

King Dasharatha was righteous, virtuous and wise. His mind was always devoted to Shri Hari. All his beloved queens, including Kaushalya, were also virtuous and followed the path of Dharma. They were devoted to the lotus feet of Shri Hari.

Once, King Dasharatha became deeply sorrowful because he had no sons. He shared his concern with Guru Vashishtha. Guru Vashishtha told him to remain patient and assured him that he would have four sons. He then invited Sage Rishyasringa and other sages to perform the Putrakameshti Yajna.

When the sage offered the sacred oblations with devotion, Agni Dev appeared holding a vessel of Havishya Kheer. The king distributed the sacred Kheer among his three queens. After consuming the Kheer, all three queens became pregnant, and when the king learned the news, he was overjoyed.

When the Yoga, Lagna, planets, weekday and Tithi all became auspicious, and all living and non-living beings were filled with joy, the eternal, omniscient, all-pervading, supremely blissful, transcendent, pure-hearted, liberated, compassionate and demon-destroying Lord Purushottam Shri Ram was born during the Abhijit Muhurat on Chaitra Shukla Navami.

The birth anniversary of Shri Ram is celebrated by everyone as Ram Navami. In 2027, Ram Navami will be observed on Thursday, April 15.
