Lakshmi Jayanti Story

Sage Durvasa, who is traditionally regarded as an incarnation associated with Lord Mahadev, was wandering across the Earth. During his travels, he saw a Vidyadhari holding a divine garland made of Santanak flowers. The fragrance of the garland had spread throughout the entire forest.

Seeing the beautiful garland, Sage Durvasa asked the Vidyadhari to give it to him. The Vidyadhari respectfully bowed before him and presented the garland to the sage.

Sage Durvasa placed the garland around his neck and continued wandering across the Earth. At that time, he saw Indra, the king of the Devas, approaching with the other Devas while riding on Airavata.

Sage Durvasa removed the garland from his neck and gave it to Indra. Instead of wearing the garland himself, Indra placed it on the head of his elephant, Airavata.

Airavata, overcome by its pride and attracted by the fragrance of the garland, dropped it to the ground with his trunk.

Seeing this, Sage Durvasa became extremely angry. He told Indra that he had failed to show proper respect to the divine garland that had been given to him. According to the story, Sage Durvasa cursed Indra, saying that the wealth and grandeur of the three worlds, because of which he had become arrogant, would be taken away from him.

As a result of Durvasa's curse, Indra's wealth, power and grandeur across the three worlds gradually began to decline. When the Asuras learned about this, they attacked Indraloka.

Under the influence of the curse, the Devas were defeated and approached Lord Brahma for protection. They praised Lord Brahma and explained their situation to Him.

Pleased with the prayers of the Devas, Lord Brahma said that only Lord Vishnu could provide a solution to this crisis.

Thereafter, Indra and all the other Devas approached Lord Vishnu and began offering prayers to Him.

Pleased with their prayers, Lord Vishnu explained that the strength of the Devas had declined because they had been deprived of Shri, or divine prosperity. Therefore, instead of fighting the Daityas at that time, they should make peace with them.

Lord Vishnu suggested the method of Samudra Manthan to the Devas. He explained that the Devas and Daityas would have to work together to churn the ocean. This churning would help the Devas regain their strength.

The Devas and Daityas then began the Samudra Manthan together.

During the churning of the ocean, many divine objects and beings appeared. It was during this process that Goddess Lakshmi also appeared.

As soon as Goddess Lakshmi appeared, both the Devas and Asuras were attracted by her divine form. According to the religious story, Lord Vishnu is the Lord of Maya, and Goddess Lakshmi chose Lord Vishnu as her husband.

Goddess Lakshmi then accompanied Lord Vishnu to Vaikuntha.

This religious story of the appearance of Goddess Lakshmi during the Samudra Manthan is associated with the observance of Lakshmi Jayanti.
