The Story of Guru Ravidas Ji and Maa Ganga

Various folk traditions associated with Guru Ravidas Ji describe his deep devotion and reverence for Maa Ganga. One of the most famous stories is associated with the saying “Man Changa To Kathauti Mein Ganga.”

According to the story, Guru Ravidas Ji was busy with his work when a Brahmin was going to take a bath in the Ganga. Ravidas Ji gave him a kaudi to offer to Maa Ganga and asked him to bring back the Prasad received from her.

The Brahmin took a bath in the Ganga and offered the kaudi given by Ravidas Ji to Maa Ganga. According to the story, Maa Ganga was pleased and gave him a golden bangle. However, greed arose in the Brahmin's mind. Instead of giving the bangle to Ravidas Ji, he kept it for himself and sold it to a goldsmith.

The Story of the Golden Bangle and the King

According to the story, the goldsmith kept the beautiful bangle in his shop. After some time, the king's daughter saw the bangle and liked it. The king purchased it for his daughter.

The princess wore the bangle, but her friend said that if there were another bangle, the pair would look even more beautiful. The princess then asked her father to bring another bangle.

The king's soldiers went to the goldsmith. The goldsmith told them that he had only one such bangle, which he had sold to the king's daughter. During the inquiry, he revealed the identity of the Brahmin who had given him the bangle.

The Brahmin Faces Trouble Because of His Greed

The king's soldiers caught the Brahmin and brought him before the king. The king ordered him to bring another bangle and warned that if he failed to do so, he and his family would be punished.

The Brahmin realized his mistake. He remembered that the bangle had actually been received from Maa Ganga in return for the kaudi given by Guru Ravidas Ji. He went to Guru Ravidas Ji, explained everything, and asked for his help.

The Message of “Man Changa To Kathauti Mein Ganga”

According to the story, Guru Ravidas Ji told the Brahmin, “Man Changa To Kathauti Mein Ganga.” A water-filled Kathauti was kept near him for his leatherwork. He asked the Brahmin to put his hand into the Kathauti and take out a bangle.

When the Brahmin put his hand into the Kathauti, he saw several golden bangles inside. He took out one of them and gave it to the king. In this way, the crisis facing his family came to an end.
