Birth Story of Lord Dattatreya
There are some differences between the accounts of Lord Dattatreya’s birth found in the Skanda Purana and Agni Purana. However, both Puranas describe Dattatreya as the second son of Mata Anasuya and an aspect of Lord Vishnu.
Sage Atri and Mata Anasuya
According to the story described in the Skanda Purana, Sage Atri, one of the mind-born sons of Lord Brahma, lived with his wife Mata Anasuya. Mata Anasuya is described as a devoted and virtuous woman who was deeply dedicated to her husband and his well-being.
Sage Atri told Mata Anasuya that there was no other woman in the world equal to her in devotion to her husband. He explained the importance of having a son, saying that a son becomes a means of earning merit and attaining a higher spiritual state for his father and also serves his parents in their old age.
After hearing Sage Atri’s words, Mata Anasuya expressed her desire to have a son. She said that practices such as Japa, Tapasya, pilgrimage, Putreshti and Mantra Sadhana were considered means of attaining a child. With her husband’s permission, she wished to undertake severe penance for this purpose.
Mata Anasuya’s Penance
After receiving permission from Sage Atri, Mata Anasuya went to the northern bank of the Narmada River. There, she began her penance according to prescribed rules and worshipped the deities while surviving on leaves and plants.
Pleased with Mata Anasuya’s intense penance, the deities came to give her Darshan at Erandi Sangam. The deities assumed the form of Brahmins and appeared before Mata Anasuya while reciting mantras.
Mata Anasuya offered them Arghya and respectfully bowed before them. Welcoming the deities who had appeared in the form of Brahmins, she expressed her wish to offer them divine roots, tubers, fruits and other food.
The deities then asked her the purpose behind her penance.
The Three Deities Granted Her a Boon
Mata Anasuya explained that through penance, a person can attain heaven, spiritual progress and the fulfillment of their wishes. Pleased with her penance and observances, the three deities—Brahma, Vishnu and Mahadev—asked her to seek a boon.
Mata Anasuya bowed before the three deities and asked that all three of them be born as her sons.
Hearing Mata Anasuya’s wish, the deities said that they would become her Ayoni-born sons, as deities do not reside in a human womb. They then blessed her with sons who would be powerful, learned and divine in nature before returning to their respective realms.
Birth of Lord Dattatreya
After receiving the boon, Mata Anasuya returned to her husband, Sage Atri, at Mount Mahendra. She told him everything about the boon she had received.
According to the story, when Mata Anasuya and Sage Atri saw each other, a divine sphere of light emerged from Sage Atri’s forehead, with rays spreading far into the distance.
Through the blessings of the deities and the divine influence, Mata Anasuya had three sons. Among them, Dattatreya, born from the aspect of Lord Vishnu, is regarded as the second son of Mata Anasuya. He is considered a divine form associated with the welfare of all living beings and spiritual knowledge.
Influence of Lord Dattatreya
Another story associated with Lord Dattatreya relates to a fierce battle between the Devas and the Daityas.
Once, a war broke out between the Devas and Daityas. Jambha was a prominent figure on the side of the Daityas, while the Devas were led by Lord Indra. The war continued for a long time, and eventually, the Daityas defeated the Devas.
After their defeat, the frightened Devas approached Brihaspati for protection. Seeing their condition, Brihaspati advised them to seek refuge with Dattatreya, the son of Sage Atri. He told them that Dattatreya was highly knowledgeable, a great ascetic and an expert in Yoga, and possessed the power to grant blessings.
The Devas Worshipped Lord Dattatreya
Following Brihaspati’s advice, all the Devas reached Lord Dattatreya’s Ashram. They praised him and offered fruits, flowers, water and other offerings.
The Devas accompanied Lord Dattatreya, praised him when he stood and served him whenever he sat down.
Dattatreya asked the Devas why they were serving him. They explained that Daityas such as Jambha had attacked the three worlds and had also taken control of their rights over performing Yajnas. They asked Lord Dattatreya to help them defeat the Daityas.
Dattatreya Tested the Devas
According to the story, Lord Dattatreya tested the Devas by making a statement about his situation. At that time, Goddess Lakshmi was present beside him in the form of a woman.
The Devas told Lord Dattatreya that the Goddess sitting beside him was none other than Jagat Mata Lakshmi and that there was nothing impure about her. They gave the example of the rays of the Sun, explaining that sunlight falls equally on everyone but does not itself become impure.
After hearing the Devas, Dattatreya instructed them to bring the Daityas before him for battle. He told them that the Daityas would lose their strength under the influence of his gaze, allowing the Devas to defeat them.
The Daityas Were Defeated
The Devas challenged the Daityas to battle. During the battle, the Daityas attacked the Devas, who became frightened and sought refuge at Dattatreya’s Ashram.
The Daityas followed the Devas and entered the Ashram. There, they saw Mata Lakshmi. According to the story, Goddess Lakshmi was in an exceptionally beautiful form at that time.
Attracted by Lakshmi’s beauty, the Daityas lost their focus on the battle. They became attached to the desire to possess her and consequently lost their strength. They then placed Lakshmi in a palanquin and carried her on their heads.
Dattatreya then told the Devas that Lakshmi had come to rest on the heads of the Daityas and that their attachment had caused them to lose their power. He instructed the Devas to take up their weapons and defeat the Daityas.
The Devas then joined together, defeated the Daityas and regained their heavenly realm.
