Parama Ekadashi Vrat Puja Vidhi

On the auspicious Dashami day of the Krishna Paksha during Adhik Maas, devotees should wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath with a devoted mind. During midday, one should eat only once with complete discipline and sleep on the ground at night.

On the morning of Ekadashi, after completing daily rituals and taking a bath, devotees should take the vow of fasting while reciting the following mantra with devotion:

“Adya Sthitva Niraharah Sarva Bhoga Vivarjitah।

Shvo Bhokshye Pundarikaksha Sharanam Me Bhavachyuta॥”

Meaning: “O Lotus-eyed Lord Narayana! Today I renounce all worldly pleasures and remain without food. O Achyuta, please grant me your refuge.”

After this, worship Lord Harikesh (Lord Vishnu) with incense, fragrance, and other offerings, and stay awake during the night while chanting and remembering the Lord. On the next morning, during Dwadashi, worship Lord Vishnu again with devotion. Thereafter, feed Brahmins and later take food silently along with family members and relatives.

Story of Parama or Kamala Ekadashi Vrat

In Avantipur, there lived a noble Brahmin named Shiv Sharma, who had five sons. The youngest among them was named Jayasharma. He became sinful and immoral in his conduct, due to which his father and family abandoned him. Because of his wrong actions, he was exiled and wandered far into the forests.

By divine destiny, one day he reached the holy pilgrimage place of Prayagraj. Weak from hunger and with a sorrowful face, he took a bath at the Triveni Sangam. Tormented by hunger, he began searching for the hermitages of sages. Soon, he came across the sacred ashram of Sage Harimitra. Many devotees had gathered there during Purushottam Maas.

At the ashram, Jayasharma listened with devotion to the glory of “Kamala Ekadashi” from the Brahmins who were narrating sacred stories. They described it as an extremely meritorious Ekadashi that grants both worldly pleasures and liberation. After hearing the sacred story of Kamala Ekadashi, Jayasharma observed the fast with proper rituals along with the other devotees staying at the sage’s ashram.

At midnight, Goddess Lakshmi appeared before him and said, “O Brahmin! I am extremely pleased with you because of the observance of the Kamala Ekadashi fast. By the command of Lord Vishnu, I have come here from Vaikuntha. I shall grant you a boon.”

After saying this, Goddess Lakshmi blessed the Brahmin and disappeared. Thereafter, the Brahmin became wealthy and returned to his father’s home. It is believed that whoever observes the sacred fast of Kamala Ekadashi and listens to its glory on Ekadashi becomes free from all sins.
