Significance of Papamochani Ekadashi

Yudhishthira asked Lord Shri Krishna which Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month. Lord Shri Krishna then explained the significance of Papamochani Ekadashi to him.

Shri Krishna said that Sage Lomasha had previously narrated the story of Papamochani Ekadashi to King Mandhata.

King Mandhata asked Sage Lomasha which Ekadashi occurs during the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month, what its rules are and what benefits can be attained by observing it.

Sage Lomasha explained that the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha in the Chaitra month is known as Papamochani Ekadashi. According to religious beliefs, this Ekadashi is considered capable of destroying sins and guiding a person toward spiritual purification.

Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Sage Lomasha narrated the story of Papamochani Ekadashi to King Mandhata and explained that once, celestial women used to sing and dance in a forest called Chaitraratha. Among them was an Apsara named Manjughosha.

Manjughosha approached Sage Medhavi with the intention of enchanting him. Sage Medhavi was living in that forest, observing Brahmacharya and performing intense penance.

One day, Manjughosha began playing the Veena and singing melodious songs. Influenced by her music, Sage Medhavi became attracted to her. Gradually, he became enchanted by her and lost focus on his penance.

A considerable amount of time passed while the sage and Manjughosha lived together. One day, Manjughosha expressed her desire to return to Devaloka and asked the sage for permission to leave.

Medhavi asked her to stay with him until evening. At that point, Manjughosha reminded him of the amount of time that had already passed.

When the sage calculated the time that had gone by, he realized that 57 years had passed while he was with Manjughosha. Thinking about the loss of his penance, he became extremely angry and cursed Manjughosha to become a Pishachi.

Manjughosha humbly asked the sage how she could be freed from the curse.

Sage Medhavi then told her that observing the Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat, which falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month, could free her from her sins and the effects of the Pishachi form.

After this, Medhavi went to the ashram of his father, Sage Chyavana. Sage Chyavana also advised him to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat.

Medhavi observed the Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat according to the prescribed rituals. According to the religious story, the effect of the Vrat helped destroy his sins, and he resumed his penance. Manjughosha also observed this Vrat and, after being freed from the Pishachi form, attained a divine form and returned to Swargaloka.

According to religious beliefs, observing the Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat and listening to its story helps a person move toward freedom from sinful actions and receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
