Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The Vrat Katha of Indira Ekadashi is associated with King Indrasena and his father. According to religious tradition, Devarshi Narada explained the importance and procedure of this fast to King Indrasena. This story connects the observance of Indira Ekadashi with the welfare of ancestors.

In ancient times, during the Satya Yuga, there was a famous prince named Indrasena, who later became the king of Mahishmatipuri and ruled his subjects according to Dharma. His fame had spread far and wide. King Indrasena was devoted to Lord Vishnu and spent his time chanting the liberating names of Govinda while remaining engaged in the proper contemplation of spiritual principles.

One day, the king was sitting comfortably in the royal assembly when Devarshi Narada descended from the sky and arrived there. Seeing him arrive, the king stood up with folded hands, worshipped him according to the proper procedure, and offered him a seat. He then said:

“Great Sage! By your grace, everything is well with me. Today, seeing you has made all my religious and sacrificial activities fruitful. Please tell me the reason for your arrival and bless me with your guidance.”

Narada said:

“O Great King, listen to what I have to say, for it may surprise you. I came from Brahma Loka to Yama Loka. There, I sat on an honoured seat, and Yama Raja worshipped me with devotion. At that time, I also saw your father in the assembly of Yama Raja. He had arrived there because of the consequences associated with breaking a fast. O King! He gave me a message to deliver to you. Listen to it.

“He said, ‘Son! Give me the merit of observing the Indira, or Shraddha Ekadashi, fast and send me to heaven.’ I have come to you carrying this message. O King! To help your father attain the heavenly realm, observe the Indira, or Shraddha Ekadashi, fast.”

The king asked:

“O Lord! Please kindly tell me the procedure for observing the Indira Ekadashi fast. In which Paksha, on which Tithi, and according to which procedure should this fast be observed?”

Indira Ekadashi Puja Vidhi

Narada said:

“O King, listen. I will explain to you the auspicious procedure for observing this fast. On the Dashami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha of the Ashwin month, wake up early, take a bath, and with a devoted mind prepare yourself for the fast. At midday, remain focused and have a single meal. At night, sleep on the ground. At the end of the night, after the morning has become pure and clear, perform your daily rituals and take a bath on the Ekadashi day. Then, with devotion, take the vow of fasting while reciting the following mantra:

Addhya sthitva nirahara sarvbhogvivarjita.

Shvo bhokshye pundarikaksha sharanam mein bhavachyut.

“O Lotus-Eyed Lord Narayana! Today I shall remain free from all enjoyments and observe the fast without food, and tomorrow I shall take food. O Achyuta, please give me refuge.”

Then worship Lord Harikesh with incense, fragrance, and other offerings, and remain awake near Him during the night. After this, when morning arrives, worship Shri Hari again with devotion on the Dwadashi Tithi. Then feed the Brahmins and, along with brothers, relatives, grandchildren, sons, and other family members, have your own meal while maintaining silence.

Lord Shri Krishna said:

“O King, after saying this to King Indrasena, Devarshi Narada disappeared.”

The king performed the sacred fast according to the procedure explained by Narada, along with the queens of the inner palace, his sons, and his servants. When the fast was completed, flowers began to shower from the sky. Indrasena’s father ascended to the abode of Lord Vishnu while riding on Garuda, and Indrasena, after enjoying an undisturbed kingdom, placed his sons on the royal throne and himself ascended to heaven.

“In this way, I have described the glory of the Indira fast before you. By reading or listening to this account, a person becomes free from all sins.”
