When is Yam Deepam in 2026?
In 2026, Yam Deepam will be observed on Friday, November 6. In the Sanatan tradition, it is an important observance of the five-day Diwali festival and falls on the Trayodashi Tithi of the Kartik month, which is also celebrated as Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi. Yam Deepam is primarily observed to honor Lord Yama, the deity of death, and to pray for the well-being, prosperity, protection, and long life of one's family members.
It is believed that lighting a lamp at the main entrance of the house during the evening helps remove the fear of untimely death. This lamp, dedicated to Lord Yama, symbolizes prayers for family protection, good health, and longevity. The festival reminds us that while death is inevitable, righteous actions, devotion, and regular spiritual practices can help reduce the fear of untimely death. Yam Deepam encourages people to enrich their lives through virtuous deeds and dharmic living.
Yam Deepam Puja Vidhi
There is no elaborate ritual prescribed specifically for Yam Deepam. On this day, devotees offer a lamp to Lord Yama and pray for protection from untimely death and other misfortunes. Therefore, the observance may be performed according to one's family traditions and customs. However, a commonly followed method is as follows.
On Trayodashi Tithi, take a bath and wear clean clothes. In the evening, light a mustard oil lamp with four wicks and place it at the main entrance of your home. The lamp should preferably be placed facing the south direction, as it is traditionally associated with Lord Yama. While lighting the lamp, pray to Lord Yama and your chosen deities for long life, good health, protection, peace, and prosperity for your family.

Yam Deepam Vrat Katha
According to a traditional legend, the messengers of Yama once approached Lord Yama and said, “O Lord, even our hearts are moved when we witness untimely deaths.” Understanding their concern, Lord Yama replied with compassion, “This is the law of destiny, and we must perform our duties accordingly. Yet, let us consider what can be done.”
Even after his explanation, the messengers remained troubled. Seeing their concern, Lord Yama reflected deeply on the issue of untimely death. After contemplation, he declared that those who perform proper worship and offer a sacred lamp on Dhanteras would be protected from the fear of untimely death. He further stated that wherever this observance is performed with faith and devotion, the fear of untimely death would not reside.
From that time onward, the tradition of offering a lamp to Lord Yama alongside the worship of Lord Dhanvantari on Dhanteras became widely practiced. Devotees began observing this ritual with deep faith and reverence.
