What is Pradosh Kaal and When Should the Puja Be Performed?
In Pradosh Vrat, the most auspicious time for worship is known as Pradosh Kaal, which lasts for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours after sunset. It is also known as the Godhuli period. Worshipping Lord Shiva, performing Abhishek, and offering Aarti during this period are considered highly beneficial and spiritually rewarding.
Important Points to Remember:
Pradosh Vrat is observed on the day when Trayodashi Tithi prevails during sunset (Pradosh Kaal).
• If Dwadashi Tithi remains in the morning but Trayodashi begins by evening, the vrat should be observed on the same day.
• If Chaturdashi Tithi begins during sunset, that day is not considered valid for Pradosh Vrat.
Therefore, knowing the correct puja timing is extremely important.
Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi
During Pradosh Kaal, devotees should worship the Shiva Linga form of Lord Sadashiva. After taking a bath, worship Lord Shiva with sesame seeds, amla, fragrant substances, flowers, and fruits. Thereafter, perform the worship of the Shiva Linga according to proper rituals during the Pradosh period.
Directly bathing in a well or pond is considered inauspicious. Therefore, water should be drawn using a rope and vessel before bathing. Bathing in rivers is considered the most auspicious, and if one gets the opportunity to bathe in the Ganga, it is regarded as especially sacred.
After bathing during Pradosh Kaal, devotees should maintain silence. Scriptures mention lighting one thousand lamps near Lord Shiva. If that is not possible, one may light one hundred or thirty-two lamps. At the very least, a ghee lamp should be lit, as it is considered highly pleasing to Lord Shiva.
The Shiva Linga should then be worshipped through the Shodashopachara method, offering fruits, incense, Naivedya, fragrance, and flowers. After the worship, devotees should circumambulate Lord Shiva 108 times with devotion and offer sincere prayers. Chanting the 108 names of Lord Rudra after the worship is also considered highly auspicious.
By observing Pradosh Vrat with devotion and discipline, devotees receive the blessings of Lord Shiva and are freed from life’s difficulties and obstacles.

Story of Pradosh Vrat
In the land of Vidarbha, there lived a famous king named Satyarath. He was righteous, truthful, and virtuous. He spent most of his life following the path of dharma.
Once, the kings of the Shalva kingdom attacked the city of Vidarbha. King Satyarath fought bravely and defeated many enemies, but eventually he was killed in the battlefield.
At that time, the queen was pregnant. Grieving over her husband’s death, she left the royal palace and went towards the western direction. After some time, she rested under a banyan tree near a lake, where she gave birth to a son.
Immediately after the birth of the child, she went into the lake to drink water because of extreme thirst. At that very moment, a crocodile caught her and killed her. Thus, after the death of both the king and queen, the child became orphaned.
After some time, a poor Brahmin woman named Uma came to that place. She saw the child and was surprised, wondering who the child was and to which family he belonged. She wished to adopt the child, but fear and confusion stopped her.
At that moment, Sage Shandilya arrived there. Seeing Uma and the orphaned child, he said, “The power of devotion is truly wonderful. Though this child was born in a royal family, he is living an orphaned life under the protection of another mother. His conduct is like that of a Brahmin, even though he is born a Kshatriya.”
Hearing this, Uma bowed to the sage and expressed her desire to know about the child. The sage told her that the child was the son of King Satyarath of Vidarbha and that his parents had died under tragic circumstances.
Deeply moved by this, Uma decided to raise the child as her own son. She took both children to her home and began caring for them.
One day, she went to a temple to beg for alms, where she again met Sage Shandilya. The sage told her that in his previous birth, the child had been the son of the king of the Pandya kingdom. His family was knowledgeable in dharma and scriptures.
Once, during Pradosh Kaal, the king was worshipping Lord Shiva. At that very time, a great disturbance arose in the city. Hearing the commotion, the king left the worship incomplete and went there. Taking advantage of the situation, the king’s enemy minister was brought before him. In anger, the king killed the minister and, because of his rage, left the worship of Lord Shiva incomplete before returning home, eating food, and going to sleep.
Because the king left the worship of Lord Shiva incomplete and committed violence in anger, his life remained incomplete and he eventually died. Due to that incomplete merit and sin, his son was born into such suffering in the next life.
The sage further explained that in a previous birth, the child’s mother had deceitfully killed another woman, and as a result, she was killed by a crocodile in this birth.
The sage said that the child had been a virtuous Brahmin in his previous birth, which is why Brahmin-like qualities were visible in him. However, he had not performed yajnas and other righteous deeds, due to which he was suffering from poverty in this life.
To attain freedom from all these sorrows and sufferings, Sage Shandilya advised them to take refuge in Lord Shiva and observe the Pradosh Vrat with devotion.
