The demons Shumbha and Nishumbha were extremely powerful and feared throughout the three worlds. Blinded by the pride of their immense strength, they not only seized the Yajna offerings that belonged to the gods but also took away their kingdoms and divine authority. Their arrogance grew to such an extent that they assumed the powers and responsibilities of Surya (the Sun God), Chandra (the Moon God), Kubera, and Yama. Their oppression did not stop there—they also began insulting and humiliating the gods.
Unable to find a way out of this grave crisis, the gods turned to Goddess Durga for protection. Distressed by the suffering and humiliation caused by the demons, they invoked the Divine Mother through the Tantroktam Devi Suktam. Since these sacred hymns were recited to please Goddess Durga, they were included in the Fifth Chapter (Uttara Charitra) of the Durga Saptashati.
Devi Suktam is regarded as one of the most powerful and effective hymns dedicated to Goddess Durga. According to beliefs, its regular recitation gradually removes difficulties, protects devotees from adversity, and blesses them with success, peace, and divine grace.
