Long ago, in the city of Bhadravati, there lived a king named Suketuman. His queen's name was Champa. Despite having every worldly pleasure, the royal couple remained troubled due to the lack of a child. The queen was particularly sorrowful, and the king’s ancestors (Pitras) would drink the water offered to them with sighs of grief, saddened by the thought that no one would carry their lineage forward.
One day, the king went for a ride into the forest on horseback without informing any of his priests or courtiers. The dense forest was filled with deer and birds, and the king wandered around admiring its beauty. As time passed, it was soon midday, and the king grew hungry and thirsty. Tormented by thirst, he began searching for water. By divine fortune, he discovered a beautiful lake surrounded by the hermitages of sages. As the king approached the hermitages, he noticed good omens: his right eye and right arm twitched signs of impending fortune. By the lake, many sages were engaged in Vedic recitations. Seeing this sacred scene, the king dismounted and approached them with folded hands, paying respectful obesity to each stage. These sages were strict followers of vows and rituals. Pleased with the king’s humility and devotion, they asked, “O King, who are you? What is your name?” The king introduced himself and humbly asked, “O revered sages, why have you all gathered here?” The sages replied, “O King, we are the Vishvadevas. We have come here to bathe, as the month of Magha is approaching. From the fifth day from today, the sacred Magha Snan will begin.” They continued, “Today is Putrada Ekadashi, the Ekadashi that grants children to those who observe its fast.” The king replied, “O Vishvadevas! If you are pleased with me, please bless me with a child.” The sages said, “O King! Today is the highly revered Putrada Ekadashi. Observe this sacred fast properly. By the grace of Lord Keshava, you shall surely be blessed with a son.”
Following the guidance of the sages, the king observed the Ekadashi fast with full devotion and rituals. Soon after, the queen conceived. In due time, the righteous king was blessed with a radiant and virtuous son, who pleased his father with his qualities and became a protector of the people.

On the auspicious Dashami day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Pausha, devotees should bathe early in the morning with a heart full of devotion. In the afternoon, take a single, simple meal with full concentration and sleep on the floor at night. At the break of dawn on Ekadashi, after completing daily routines and bathing, take the vow of fasting with devotion while chanting the following mantra:
