Sundarkand Path

Sundarkand is one of the most significant and sacred chapters of the great epic Ramayana. It forms the fifth section of Maharishi Valmiki’s original Ramayana. The same is also elaborately described in Goswami Tulsidas’s Shri Ramcharitmanas. Among the various beneficial Anushthan (Ritual) traditions of Sanatan Dharma, reciting Sundarkand holds a supreme place.

This chapter presents a remarkable portrayal of Lord Hanuman’s mighty deeds, his wisdom, strength, and unwavering devotion.

The Sundar Kand mainly narrates the events that took place in Lanka during Hanuman Ji’s quest to find Mother Sita. It includes his departure towards Lanka, overcoming obstacles along the way, forging a friendship with Vibhishana, meeting Mata Sita in Ashoka Vatika and giving her Lord Rama’s signet ring, slaying Ravana’s son Akshay Kumar, and setting Lanka ablaze. This chapter stands as a symbol of Hanuman Ji’s valour and triumph, which is why its recitation is considered especially important among all the chapters of the Ramayana.

Reciting Sundarkand is considered especially auspicious on Tuesdays and Saturdays. On these days, devotees receive the blessings of Lord Hanuman, and even those afflicted by Shani are relieved of their suffering. Regular recitation bestows courage, confidence, positive energy, peace, and success. For quicker and more effective results, performing 121 recitations is regarded as highly auspicious and rewarding. When this recital is completed within 3, 5, 7, or 11 days, the devotee attains special benefits and desired outcomes. On this basis, the value of our Anushthan has been determined according to 121 recitations.

Worship Method of Sundarkand Path

1. Initial Preparations for the Anushthan

Before beginning the recitation, the devotee should bathe and wear clean clothes. Purity of both body and mind is essential. During the ritual, one must observe sattvic conduct and maintain complete celibacy. These are not mere traditions, but disciplines that prepare the body and mind for worship. Eating sattvic food and maintaining inner purity help calm the mind and focus it, thereby ensuring the full spiritual benefit of the recitation.

2. Choosing the Right Time and Place

Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered the most auspicious days for Sundar Kand recitation, as they are dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Lord Shani. It is advised to avoid performing the recitation on Amavasya (new moon day). The most suitable times are in the morning or after 4 PM in the evening. The recitation should not be done after 12 noon. The puja may be performed in the home’s prayer room or any quiet, sacred place free from disturbances.

3. The Puja Procedure

• Setting the Altar:

Place a red cloth on a small altar and install an idol or picture of Lord Hanuman. Preferably, choose an image or idol where Lord Hanuman is shown with Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Lakshmana, as Hanuman’s devotion is inseparable from the service of Shri Rama. Sit facing east or south.

• Beginning the Worship:

Every auspicious work begins with an invocation of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. After this, invoke Lord Shri Rama and Lord Hanuman with devotion.

• Lighting the Lamp:

Light a lamp filled with cow’s ghee or sesame oil. Ensure that it remains lit throughout the recitation.

• Taking the Sankalpa (Vow):

Hold water in your right hand, and mentally repeat your name, lineage (gotra), and the specific purpose for which you are performing the recitation. This act sets a clear intention for the ritual.

• Performing the Recitation:

Begin the Sundar Kand with full concentration and devotion. Do not leave in between or engage in conversation while reciting. If completing the entire text at once is not possible, it may be read gradually—several verses each day—until completed.

• Concluding the Ritual:

After completing the recitation, chant the Hanuman Chalisa and then perform the aarti of Lord Hanuman and Shri Rama. Following this, offer bhog (sacred food) to the Lord and distribute prasad among the devotees. This marks the completion of the ritual cycle, wherein the devotee offers devotion and, in return, receives divine blessings.
