Worship Procedure for Shiva Sahasranam Chanting

Before beginning the chanting of Shiva Sahasranam, it is essential first to ensure the sanctity of the worship place. For this, sprinkle Ganga water or cow urine to purify the place and the worship materials. Then lay a clean seat made of Kush grass or cloth of white or red color – this is considered especially beneficial in Shiva worship. For the puja, place the idol, picture, or Shiva Lingam of Lord Shiva facing the north or east direction. Alongside, idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Nandi, Nagas, and other attendant deities can also be placed.

Now begin the worship procedure. Offer sacred ash (bhasma), sandalwood paste, uncooked rice (akshat), kumkum, roli, Bilva leaves (Tripatrika), datura, bhang, and Mandar or white flowers to Lord Shiva. Then light a lamp with pure ghee or sesame oil, offer fragrant incense and perfume, and perform the aarti with camphor. After this, present the naivedya (food offering) consisting of Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), Bel fruit, coconut, jaggery, honey, fruits, dry fruits, and sweets of white or yellow color such as kheer, laddoo, etc.

Once the worship is complete, begin chanting the Shiva Sahasranam Stotra with a pure mind and full concentration. During the chanting, use a Rudraksha, Tulsi, or crystal mala and keep the atmosphere pure with the sweet sound of conch shell and bell. For the fulfillment of specific desires and spiritual elevation, chanting the Shiva Gayatri Mantra during this ritual is also considered extremely beneficial.

At the end of the worship, perform the aarti of Lord Shiva using a lamp with camphor and ghee. Finally, with devotion, offer dakshina, Rudraksha, clothes, grains, fruits, or money as donation.
