In North India, Shani Jayanti is celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month, while in South India, it is observed on the Amavasya of the Vaishakha month. Vat Savitri Vrat is also observed on the same day in the Jyeshtha month.
On this day, women observe a fast for the long life of their husbands and worship the banyan tree. Devotees are advised to worship Shani Dev for mental and spiritual upliftment. Worshiping him is believed to bestow blessings, leading to liberation from the challenges encountered in life.
Appearance of Shani Dev
According to Agni Purana, Sun God has three wives – Rajni , Prabha and Sangya. Ragini is the daughter of Raivat , she gave birth to a son named Revant. Surya had a son named Prabhat from his second wife Prabha. The third wife of Lord Surya Sangya was the daughter of Vishwakarma , from her womb Vaivaswat Manu and twin children Yama and Yamuna were born. Sangya could not bear the brightness of the God Sun due to which she was always troubled. To reduce her troubles, Sangya wanted to increase her power by doing penance, hence she established her shadow as a woman in the form of her reflection and went for penance without informing the God Sun. The form of the shadow was like that of a Sangya , hence Suryadev could not understand whether it was a Sangya or its shadow. The shadow of the Sangya had no problem with the brightness of the Sun God. Because she was the form of a shadow. Due to which the sun's brightness had no effect on her.
After some time, two sons named Savarni Manu and Shani were born from Sangya's shadow and part of Sun and also gave birth two daughters named Tapati and Vishti.
