Ramanuja Jayanti

Ramanuja was a philosopher and thinker. Ramanuja is considered the most eminent teacher in the philosophy of Sri Vaishnavism. The great saint and preacher of Vaishnava religion, Sri Ramanuja was born on 25 April 1017 AD, on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month, in a Brahmin family of a village named Sri Perumbudur in Tamil Nadu. In South India, his birth anniversary is celebrated as Jayanti. He is also known as Ramanujacharya.

Early life

His father's name was Keshav Bhatta and mother's name was Kantimati. His father had died in his childhood. After this, he went to Kanchi and took initiation into the Vedas from Guru 'Yadav Prakash'. Ramanuja had a very sharp intellect. At the age of just 16, he had acquired complete knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads. Many times, he used to explain the Vedas and Upanishads more than his guru ‘Yadav Prakash’. When Ramanuja came to know that jealousy had replaced happiness in the Guru's mind, he left Grahastha Ashram and took initiation into Sanyas from a monk named 'Yatiraj' of Sri Rangam. Ramanuja was the chief disciple of Acharya Aalavandar Yamunacharya. He trying to meet his Guru but failed and finally when he was going to meet his Guru, but he died before he could reach. When Ramanuja saw his Guru, three of his fingers were bent. Ramanuja, seeing his Guru's three fingers and knowing his Guru's wish, resolved to do three things. ‘FirstBrahmasutra’, second‘Vishnu Sahastranam’, third – ‘Divya Prabandhanam ka Tika’.

Staying at Shaligram in Sri Rangam, Mysore, he propagated Vaishnava religion for 12 years. He toured the whole of India to propagate religion. In the disciple tradition, Ramanand was his disciple whose disciples were Kabir and Surdas. At last, 'Yadav Prakash' who was Ramanuja's guru repented his mistake and he also became Ramanujacharya's disciple and started serving him.

Contribution and Reason for Fame

Sri Ramanujacharya was a religious preacher, social reformer, scholar and of strong character. The most famous of all his works is ‘Shri Bhashya’. Which is completely based on Brahmasutra. Apart from this, his other works have also come out like Vedanta Deep, Vedanta Saar, Geeta Bhashya etc. are his famous works. Ramanuja always kept preaching equality of all classes. The most important contribution of Ramanuja is the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which means that the entire universe is one family.

True meaning of devotion

According to Ramanujacharya, the meaning of devotion is not to just chant by mouth or pray to God by worshiping or reciting bhajans and kirtans, but to meditate on God, contemplate, get absorbed in his meditation and awaken love for him in the mind by meditating on God.

Who is Brahm?

Ramanuja has called God as Brahma and Chitta and Achitta are forms of Brahma, that is, there is Brahma in Chitta and Achitta also has Brahma. We should search for Brahma by meditating. He is also called the saint of Bhakti branch.

There is a 216 feet tall statue of Ramanujacharya in a village called Muchintal in Hyderabad. Which has been named ‘STATUE OF EQUALITY’.

Death

In 1137 AD, after completing 120 years of age, he left his body and became Brahmalin.

Importance of Ramanuja Jayanti

Ramanuja was a Vedic philosopher and social reformer. He made many efforts to eliminate the evils prevalent in the society. On the special occasion of Ramanuja Jayanti, everyone remembers the principles and reform works of Ramanuja so that the principles given by him can be implemented in life, which can give a new enthusiasm and true path to our life.
