 Parashuram Jayanti

Lord Vishnu has taken many incarnations for the welfare of the earth and to eliminate evil powers from the earth, out of which one incarnation of Lord Vishnu is in the form of Lord Parashuram. Lord Vishnu has taken the sixth incarnation in the form of Parashuram to reduce the burden of this earth and eliminate all the existing evils. Parashuram is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Parshuram is also known by the names Bhargava , Bhrigupati , Parshudhar , Jamadagnya , Renukeya etc.

He was born on the evening of Pradoshkaal on the Tritiya of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month. His birthday is celebrated as Parashuram Jayanti . This date is also known as Akshaya Tritiya. Many Vishnu devotees observe fast for Vishnu incarnation Parshuram Ji and worship him on this day. By fasting on this day, man gets saved very virtuous and beneficial results are obtained.

Let us know how Parashuram ji was born ? And why was his nature so angry and brave?

A sage named Richik lived in the forest. He was extremely angry and brave by nature. One day the thought of getting married came to his mind. He went to Raja Gaadhi for marriage. Raja Gaadhi was a part of Lord Indra. He had a daughter named Satyavati. She was very beautiful , attractive and graceful. Sage Richik asked King Gaadhi for his daughter for marriage. King Gaadhi, did not want to give his daughter to that very angry nature and old Brahmin Richik, he said to Richik that if you give me a thousand black horses as the price of the daughter, which are as bright as the moon and as fast as the wind, then I will marry my daughter to you . Maharishi Richik gave him one thousand horses born from Ashvatirtha from Varud Dev . Then, despite not wanting, King Gaadhi had to marry his daughter Satyavati to Maharishi Richik.

After that, he prepared kheer for Satyavati with the desire of having a child and on being pleased by her, For the birth of a great kshatriya son, another sacrificial kheer was made for his mother also.

Maharishi Richik, while giving kheer to Satyavati, said, this kheer is for you, and this is for your mother. You should use them appropriately. Saying this he went to the forest.

While giving kheer, Satyavati's mother said to her - 'Daughter! Everyone wants the most virtuous son for themselves, no one has any special interest in the qualities of their wife's brother. So you give me your kheer, and you take mine ; Because my son will have to take care of the entire earth and what does a Brahmin Kumar have to do with power , property etc. , On saying this, Satyavati gave her kheer to her mother.

On returning from the forest, the sage saw Satyavati and said - 'Oh sinner! What wrong have you done that makes your body look so terrible? Surely you have consumed the kheer prepared for your mother , it is not right.

"I attributed in her kheer the entire wealth of power, valor, courage, and strength, and in yours’s kheer, I included the incorporation of all Brahminical virtues such as peace, knowledge, etc. By using their opposites, your son will be engaged in martial activities like a fierce warrior, possessing terrifying weapons, just like a dedicated Kshatriya, and your mother son will be peace-loving, devoted to Brahmanical virtues. Hearing this, Satyavati clasped his feet, bowed, and said, 'Lord! Due to lack of knowledge, I have done this, so please be pleased and do something so that my son does not turn out this way, and instead, let my grandson become virtuous.' Upon this, the sage said, 'So be it.'

Thereafter she gave birth to Jamadagni and his mother gave birth to Vishwamitra and Satyavati became a river named Kaushiki.

Jamadagni was married to Renuka, daughter of Renu. From him, Lord Parshuram ji, who destroyed all the Kshatriyas was born, who was a part of Lord Narayana.

Why was Lord Parshuram named Parashuram?

Jamadagni's wife Renuka gave birth to five sons. Whose names were – Rumanvan , Sushen , Vasu , Vishwavasu and Ram.

Lord Parshuram's parents used to call him "Ram". Ram was engrossed in the devotion of Lord Shiva since childhood. Later, when father Jamadagni saw Ram's devotion towards Lord Shiva, he took Ram to the Himalayan Mountains and asked him to worship Lord Shiva. Ram obeyed his father's orders and started worshiping Shiva. Lord Shiva became pleased after seeing Ram's determination and rigorous penance. After that he appeared infront of Ram and pleased with his devotion , gave him an axe called Parashu to destroy the demons. Once Ram picked up the Parshu, he never put it back on the earth, hence his name was ' Parshuram'.

Why did Lord Parshuram have to kill his mother?

One day Renuka, wife of sage Jamadagni, had gone to collect water from the lake. A handsome prince was bathing in that lake. Renuka became enamored after seeing him. When Renuka came to sage Jamdagni in a state of attachment , Jamdagni knew everything through the penance of his yoga power and ordered his sons to cut off the mother's head. All the sons refused to do so. At that time Ram had gone to do penance for Lord Shiva. After a few days, when he came to his father's ashram , he greeted his father and told him about the axe he had obtained through his penance. At the same time, father Jamdagni asked Parashuram ji to cut off his mother's head. Parshuram ji knew that his father was a great ascetic. If my father has asked to cut off my mother's head, then the welfare of his mother and Parshuram ji must be hidden in it. Thinking this, he cut off his mother's head with an axe. The father was happy and asked for a boon. Then Parshuram ji asked for his mother's life as a boon.

Apart from this, there are other Leelas which are mentioned in Ramayana and Ramcharit Manas. Kritavirya Kumar Arjun had killed Parashuram’s father Jamadagni. Parashuram, a mighty, very angry and Kshatriya-like warrior, had made this earth devoid of Kshatriyas 21 times to avenge father's death. After this, performed the yagya and he donated this earth to Rishi Kashyap as Dakshina and also took a vow not to live on earth and started living by building an ashram on Mahendra Parvat . After this, his bravery is also seen in Ramayana which is published in the context of Dhanush Bhang.
