Life of Meera Bai

In the year 1498, a girl was born in the royal family of Rana Ratan Singh in a village named Kudki in Merta state of Rajasthan, that girl was named Meera. When Meera was 7 years old, a sage came to Ratan Singh Rana's house. Rana welcomed the sadhu and provided him food etc. Pleased with Rana's spirit of service, the sadhu gave an idol of Shri Krishna to Rana. Meera liked the idol of Shri Krishna very much, so she asked for that idol from her father. Her father thought that a small girl would not be able to take care of the idol of God, and he refused to give the idol. Meera Bai was also of a very stubborn nature, when her father did not give her the idol, Meera stopped eating and drinking. Seeing such sacrifice of his daughter, Rana had to give that idol of Shri Krishna. She kept the idol very lovingly. One day Meera heard the beautiful sound of the drum. When Meera peeked outside, she asked her friends what was happening? Then one of her friends told her that a marriage was taking place. Meera was innocent at that time. She ran to her mother and asked her who was her groom? Mother looked at her innocent face and pointing towards the idol of Shri Krishna said, this is your groom and from then onwards Meera settled Lord Shri Krishna in her mind as her king. When Meera Bai was only 8 years old, her parents died. After this, Meera was brought up by her grandfather Ravduda. It was he who taught Meera poetry, music, and craftsmanship. Meera gradually started enjoying devotion to Shri Krishna. In 1516, Meera was married to Prince Bhojraj, the elder son of King Rana Sanga of Chittor. Even after marriage there was no decrease in his devotion. Although she followed her husband's duties very well, in the evening she used to remember Shri Krishna and get lost in his devotion. He did not like the allurements of the world. Bhojraj tried a lot to bring Meera to worldly glory, but he failed. Bhojraj died during a war in 1521 and Meera Bai became completely alone. After receiving the news of his son's death, Rana Sanga ordered Meera to commit sati along with her husband. But Meera Bai refused to commit Sati, calling Shri Krishna her real husband. After this, his devotion to Krishna started improving further. She used to sit in temples and worship Lord Krishna the whole day. His family members were not liking his devotion to Shri Krishna. Therefore, he gave poison to Meera to drink but by the grace of Shri Krishna, the poison had no effect on Meera. Many times, he tried to kill Meerabai but by the grace of Shri Krishna, nothing happened to Meerabai. Then they started behaving cruelly with Meerabai.
