Story of Matsya Avatar
A Kalpa is an era in which all four eras namely Satyayuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparayuga and Kaliyuga come. When one Kalpa ends and another Kalpa is about to begin, then Nar Shrestha, Narayana, the unborn, triple Lord Vishnu incarnates. Lord Vishnu has taken ten incarnations. In which Matsya incarnation is his first incarnation.
Let us know what was the reason for Lord Vishnu taking the fish incarnation?
According to Matsya Purana, in ancient times, Surya's son Maharaj (Vaivasvata) Manu handed over the responsibility of the kingdom to his son and went to a part of Malayachal and performed a severe penance. There he attained perfect yoga. In this way, crores of years passed while he was performing penance, then Kamalasan Shri Brahma Ji appeared in front of him pleased and said – Ask for a boon. Maharaj Manu bowed to Brahma and said - I want to ask for only one best boon. That is, at the time of cataclysm I should be able to protect the entire living organism. Then Brahma ji said - this will happen and disappeared.
Once upon a time, while Maharaj Manu was performing Pitr-Tarpan, a fish fell on his palm along with the water. Seeing the form of that fish, his heart was filled with compassion and mercy, and he started trying to protect it. He put that fish in his Kamandalu. In a single day and night, the fish grew sixteen inches long and started saying, “Protect me, protect me.” Then the king put that water bearer in a big earthen pot. There too he grew three feet tall in one night. Again, the fish said to Maharaja Manu – 'I am under your protection, protect me, protect me. Then Surya Putra Manu kept him in the well. But when the fish could not fit into the well, the king threw it into the pond. There he again grew to the size of a yojana and humbly said – Protect me, protect me.’ After that Manu left him in the Ganga River. When he took on a bigger form there too, the king threw him into the sea. When that fish covered the entire ocean, Manu got scared and asked him - 'Are you a demon king? Or God Vasudev, otherwise how can anyone else be like this? Who can have a body that has the expansion of millions of Yojanas? Keshav! I have come to know that 'You are trying to distract me by taking the form of a fish. And then Manu bowed to the Lord. God said – Sinless! Okay, okay, you have recognized me well. Bhupal! In a short time, this earth along with mountains, forests and banks will be submerged in water. For this reason, this boat has been built by all the gods to protect the entire living group. You protect all the sperms, eggs and living beings and all the orphans and others by putting them in this boat. Rajan! When this boat starts wavering due to the wind of the end, at that time Rajendra! You tie it to my horn. At the end of the cataclysm, you will be the creator of all living beings. At that time the gods will worship you.
Saying this, Lord Matsya disappeared there. Manu also stayed there and continued practicing the yoga received by the grace of Lord Vasudev until the predicted time of doomsday arrived.
When the cataclysm occurred, Janardan appeared in the form of a horned fish. At the same time, a snake also came near Manu, flowing in the form of a rope. Then Manu, with the power of his yoga, pulled all the living beings and loaded them on the boat and tied them to the horn of the fish with a snake-like rope. After that, after paying obeisance to Lord Janardan, he himself sat on that boat. So, in this way, due to Manu's penance, the boon received from Lord Brahma was fulfilled and all living beings were also protected.
