Kurma Jayanti

Lord Vishnu has incarnated many times for the welfare of this world, but once for the welfare of the gods, he took the form of a tortoise and saved the gods from the atrocities of demons and gave them their rights and their share. Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Kurma (tortoise) on the full moon day of Vaishakh month. This day itself is celebrated as Kurma Jayanti. To save the gods from the demons, Lord Vishnu advised them to obtain nectar by churning the ocean so that by drinking that nectar the gods could attain immortality and the gods could be saved from the demons, but during the churning of the ocean, when the Mandarachal mountain fell due to the earth's gravity and When it started drowning in the sea due to its own weight, the gods seeing their mission failing, appealed to Shri Vishnu for help. Then to help the gods and make the purpose of the gods successful, Lord Shri Vishnu took the incarnation of Kurma and lifted Mandarachal mountain. Lifted the mountain on his back and provided support so that the purpose of churning the ocean could be accomplished. In this way, by taking the Kurma incarnation, Lord Shri Hari made the gods prosperous.

Why did Lord Vishnu need to take Kurma incarnation?

Once upon a time, sage Durvasa got angry with Indra and cursed Devraj Indra. Due to the curse of sage Durvasa, the glory of Devraj Indra ended. The power of all the gods diminished. When the demons heard the news that due to the curse of sage Durvasa, Lord Indra and all the gods had become powerless and their glory had been destroyed, they attacked the gods. Being powerless, all the gods were running away to save their lives. The power of the demons was overwhelming the gods. Shukracharya, the guru of the demons, had attained Mrityanjeevani by worshiping Lord Shiva. Due to which they brought back to life the demons who were killed in the war and when the gods were killed, they were destroyed. Seeing this, Indra etc. gods got scared and came to the shelter of Shri Vishnu ji and called out - Protect me! Protect! Shri Vishnu ji told Devraj Indra - You should not fight a war when times are adverse because due to the curse the glory of all the gods has been destroyed.

It is foolish to walk with eyes wide open when a storm approaches. A wise man should sit quietly with his eyes closed until the storm comes and wait for the storm to subside.Fighting an armed warrior unarmed is not bravery, it is suicide. Therefore a wise man should compromise instead of war.

You people can regain your glory and power and can also conquer the demons. Indra asked how? Then Shri Hari explained in detail that you should compromise with the demons and churn the ocean. With the nectar obtained from the churning of the ocean, you will become immortal and will also regain your lost glory. After this, Mandrachal mountain was made a churner and Vasuki serpent was made a rope for churning the ocean. When Mandrachal Mountain was thrown into the sea, it drowned. Because Mandrachal Mountain did not have its base in the sea. Due to which this task of churning the ocean appeared unsuccessful. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma and placed the Mandrachal mountain on his back and completed the task of churning the ocean.

Importance of Kurma Jayanti

Just as during Samudra Manthan, Mandrachal Mountain started sinking into the sea and the work done by the gods appeared to be unsuccessful. Then all the gods took refuge in Lord Vishnu. Lord Shri Vishnu, the destroyer of all troubles, had vanquished the troubles of the gods by taking the incarnation of Kurma. Similarly, Lord Vishnu is always present to relieve the sufferings of his devotees and there is no doubt that he comes in some form or the other and helps his devotees.
