Guru Nanak Jayanti is very special for sanatan dharm as well as for the Sikh community. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had founded the Sikh religion; hence the people of Sikh religion consider him as their first Guru and celebrate his birthday as Guru Nanak Jayanti every year. This occasion provides us a chance to remember important aspects of his life.

Early life of Guru Nanak Saheb

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15 April 1469 in a village named Talwandi in Punjab. Presently this place situated at the border of Pakistan. His mother's name was Tripta Kaur and father's name was Kalyan Chandra (he was also called Mehta Kalu). Nanak Sahib was spiritually minded and opposed to orthodoxy since childhood and used to spend all his time in introspection and Satsang.

Nanak Sahib believed that this life is given by God and whatever is there in this life should be dedicated to God only. Because of this ideology he devoted his entire life to the welfare of society.

Social contribution of Guru Nanak Saheb

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the main founder of Sikhism. He dedicated his entire life to reforming the society religiously and socially and he has given many important messages to reform our society which are still used for the welfare of human life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught the lesson of unity to the society. He always stressed upon the people to adopt one religion and urged the people that we all human beings are equal. We should respect all the human beings by keeping aside evils like caste and religion. Everyone should be given the right to live equally.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was such an ideal man who lived like a saint throughout his life but kept giving the message of karma to the whole world. Guru Nanak Dev Ji organized his followers as a community and formulated some rules for collective worship. He emphasized on chanting the name of God, gave the message of fulfilling one's responsibilities with honesty and hard work, taught servitude, shared whatever one earns with the needy people and advocated for social equality and respect for women, all based on the principles of unity and brotherhood.

Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

In our country, even today people follow the teachings given by Guru Nanak and some of the teachings imparted by him are as follows.

- There is only one God.

- Worship only one God.

- God is present everywhere.

- Perform your actions with honesty.

- Always help needy people.

- One should always avoid doing bad things..

- Treat everyone equally, whether they are male or female.

The Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Ji dedicated his entire life to raising voice against established religious , societal injustices and laid the foundation of the Sikh religion based on spiritual teachings. On this day, the teachings and Sermon of this great spiritual leader are remembered. Following his teachings promotes harmony and idealism in one's life. By adhering to his teachings, individuals connect with their spiritual side, and this connection inspires them to perform good deeds, ultimately leading them towards liberation.
