Learn how to perform your own Shraddha ritual while alive. Is it possible for a person to attain well-being without performing the Shraddha ceremony?

After traveling in the earth, when Garuda ji saw that all the people were interested in their own selfishness, then he remembered the words of Shri Krishna ji that he had said that by performing Shraddh, a person gets auspiciousness. Thinking this, Garuda ji thought that when a person dies, then who will be the authority to perform Shraddh for that dead person? With this type of question in mind, he went to Shri Krishna and started asking him.

Garuda ji said- Oh Lord! After the death of a person, who has the right to complete his Shraddh rituals? Who can perform Shraddh of a dead person? How many types of this action are there? Please tell me all this.

Shri Krishna said- Hey Garuda! If a person dies, his last rites and Shraddh can be performed by his son, grandson, great-grandson, brother, brother's children or people of Sapind or same caste. In the absence of all these, the child whose ancestors of seven generations and the deceased person have the same ancestors is entitled to do this work. If the men of both the clans (maternal and ancestral clans) have died, that is, no man is present, then in this situation women can perform the Shraddh rituals by Acharya’s. If a person has voluntarily broken ties with all his relatives, then the king (Panchayat head) should perform his Shraddh.

There are three types of this action, which have been named Purva, Madhyam and Uttara action. It is necessary to perform this action every year with a specific ritual. You hear from me the result of this Shraddh ritual.

Brahma, Indra, Rudra, Ashwini Kumar, Surya, Agni, Vasu, Marudran, Vishvedev, ancestors, birds, humans, animals, reptiles, mothers and all other creatures present in this world, man can please them all by performing their Shradh. The whole world becomes happy with this type of Shraddh.

People who are satisfied with the Shraddh performed by their relatives satisfy the person performing the Shraddh with son, wife, wealth etc. Hey Garuda. In this way I have briefly explained the difference between rights and deeds.

Garuda said- Oh God! You have informed me about the officials performing Shraddh, if even one of the officials performing Shraddh of a dying person is not present, then what should a person do at that time?

Hearing Garuda ji's question, Shri Krishna said - When there is no authority figure nor anyone's rights are being ensured, then in such a situation a person should perform Shraddh himself while alive. After fasting and bathing, one should concentrate on Lord Krishna and worship the doer, the enjoyer, Lord Vishnu with a concentrated mind. After that, that person should offer three Jaldhenu (virtual water made cow) along with sesame seeds and Dakshina to his ancestors 'Om Pitribhyah Swadha' dedicate by saying and while giving Dhenudan 'Om Agnaye Kavyavahanay Swadha Namah' and 'Om Somay Twa Pitrimate Swadha Namah' Saying this, the person should face the south and while giving the third Jaladhenu along with Dakshina, say 'Yamayangirse Swadha Namah' We should keep saying this. At the time of Lord Vishnu's Yagya and Jaldhenudan, Brahmins should be called and served food. That person should keep the first Jaldhenu in the north direction and the second Jaldhenu in the south direction and by placing the third Dhenu in between those two Dhenus, he should perform the remaining tasks of Shraddh by invoking etc. Before making this invocation, he should worship the Brahmins, the representatives of the world gods, by invoking them and saying –

Vasubhyastvamaham vipra rudrebhyastvamaham tatah.

Suryeabhyastvamaham vipra bhojayameeti tanvadet.

After this, the remaining tasks of Avahanadi (inviting) should be done like the remaining tasks of the ancestors. Then he should donate it to a virtuous Dhenuka Brahmin for the sake of Vasu. One cow should be given to the Brahmins located in the southeast corner for Rudradev and in the south direction for Suryadev and a vessel filled with sesame seeds should be dedicated for the world gods. After this Akshayodak should be donated to the Brahmins. Pleased with the actions of the person, the Brahmin 'Om Swasti' This statement should bless the completion of Shraddh rituals. Then remember Lord Vishnu with Ashtakshar-Mantra and immerse him. After this, stay healthy and remember Kuldevi (clan goddess), Ishani (Goddess Parvati), Shiva and Lord Narayana. Then go to the best accessible riverbank on Chaturdashi Tithi. Donate clothes and pieces of iron there and face south 'Om Jitam Te' Light the fire while chanting the mantra.

After performing this ritual, he should make an effigy out of fifty Kushas and burn it. Then perform the last rites in the crematorium and finally complete the Purnahuti (complete burn) ritual. After that remember the land without fire, Yama and Rudradev. After performing Havan, the said deities should be invoked at the main place. After doing this, he should cook the charu (food prepared for havan) with moong dal in fire and later cook the other charu by mixing it with sesame seeds - 'Om Prithivyai Namastubhyam' Offer the first charu with this mantra 'Om Yamay Namashcha' Offer the second charu to Yama with this mantra. 'Om Namashchath Rudray Shamshanapataye Namah' With this mantra the one should dedicate the charu to Lord Rudra. After that, the Shraddh performer should release seven Anjali (hand) waters in seven names for Yamraj while reciting the following mantra –

'Om Yamaya Swadha Tasmai Namah', 'Om Dharmarajaya Swadha Tasmai Namah', 'Om Mrityave Swadha Tasmai Namah', 'Om Antakaya Swadha Tasmai Namah', 'Om Vaivasvataya Swadha Tasmai Namah', 'Om Kalay Swadha Tasmai Namah' and 'Om Sarvpranharaya Swadha Tasmai Namah.'

Then the Shraddh performer says, 'All of you belong to such and such (name of the person whose Shraddh is being performed) gotra, this Tilodak (sesame ball) should be for you, saying this, donate ten pindas along with the Arghya flower. After this, offer them incense, lamp, naivedya, scent and renewable water. After donating the above ten Pindas, one should meditate on the beautiful auspicious face of Lord Vishnu.

After performing this ritual, monthly Shraddh and Sapindhikarana should be performed at the end of Ashaucha (impure time). Whether Shraddh is performed for oneself or for others, this is the rule. Strength, health, wealth and age – these four are unstable, hence knowing this one should perform one's Shraddh while one is alive.

This has been taken from Garun Purana. In this, Lord Shri Krishna explains the importance of Shraddh Kriya and says that only Shraddh Kriya can bring welfare to man. While explaining this to Garun ji, Lord Shri Krishna clearly emphasizes that Shraddh ritual is very important for human welfare, but it is not necessary that Shraddh ritual should be performed only by man's own son. Shri Krishna ji says that anyone can perform the Shraddh ritual, only he should perform the Shraddh ritual as per the rituals. When Garun ji asked Shri Krishna ji that if a person has no relatives then who can perform Shraddh, then Krishna ji clarifies this and says that it is necessary to perform the Shraddh rituals only then it is beneficial for the human being and if there is no relative of the deceased person, then the head or panch of that area should perform Shraddh of that person. If he too cannot perform Shraddh, then a person must know that without performing Shraddh, he cannot cross the ocean of life. It is possible, therefore, that he can perform his Shraddh even while he is alive and by the virtue of that Shraddh, a person can easily take birth in a new life after death and can get relief from the tortures of Yamalok.

This gives us a message to the entire human race that in today's modern era, man is gradually forgetting the rituals like Shraddh or due to busy schedule, he does not perform the Shraddh ritual as per the rituals, but man should be aware of this fact. It should be kept in mind that without Shraddh rituals, his welfare is not possible, hence the entire human race should perform the Shraddh rituals of their ancestors properly and advise their future generations to also perform this Shraddh ritual properly.
