Papmochani Ekadashi
The significance of the 'Papamochani' Ekadashi in the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra;(Between March and April)
Yudhishthira asked, "O Lord, please tell me the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra, and also explain its significance."
Lord Sri Krishna replied, "O King, I will tell you a story about this Ekadashi, which was narrated by the sage Lomash to the great king Mandhata when he asked about it for the benefit of all people."
Mandhata said- Lord! For the welfare of the people, I want to know that by which name Ekadashi is observed in Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month? What is its method and what result is obtained from it? Please tell me all these things.
The History of Papamochani Ekadashi fasting
Lomash ji said- Long ago, in a forest called Chaitra Rath, where Apsaras (celestial nymphs) would dance and sing with their attendants, a sage named Madhavi lived there and observed celibacy. One day, an Apsara named Manjughosha came to the forest to enchant the sage with her melodious singing and sweet music. However, upon hearing her, the sage's disciples became distracted and enchanted by her beauty, much to the sage's dismay.
Seeing this, Manjughosha approached the sage and started to embrace and enjoy his company. The sage was unable to resist her beauty and they spent many days together, breaking his vow of celibacy. When Manjughosha was ready to leave, she asked the sage for permission to go back to her home in heaven.
Medhavi said - Goddess! Stay with me till evening. Apsara said- Vipravar! I don't know how much of the evening has passed till now. Please do me a favor and think about the past.
Lomashji said, "Oh king! Hearing the words of the apsara, Medhavi's eyes were filled with wonder. At that moment, he calculated the time that had passed and realized that he had been living with her for 57 years. When Munni came to know that she had destroyed his penance, she became very angry and cursed him to become a demon. Burned by the curse of the sage, she humbly pleaded, "Oh best of the Brahmins! Please free me from this curse. Friendship with noble people is established merely by speaking seven words or walking together with seven steps. Brahmin! I have spent many years with you; now please have mercy on me." The sage said, "Oh noble one, listen to me. This curse can be lifted. What should I do? You have destroyed my great penance." Brahmin! I have spent many years with you. Please be kind to me now.
The sage said- you have ruined my great penance. The auspicious Ekadashi that falls in the month of Chaitra in the dark fortnight of Krishna Paksha is called "Papamochani," which destroys all sins. Sundari! Your possession will end if you observe that fast. Hearing this, the intelligent girl went to the hermitage of her father, the sage Chyavana. When he saw her, he asked, "What have you done, my child? You have destroyed your virtue!."
Medhavi replied, "Father! I have committed the sin of enjoying with Apsaras. Tell me a repentance that can destroy my sin."
Chyavana said, "Child! The Papamochani Ekadashi that occurs in the Chaitra during the dark fortnight will destroy your sins if you observe it." Upon hearing her father's words, Medhavi observed that fast, and her sins were destroyed, and she became complete with her penance. Similarly, Manjughosha also observed this excellent fast. As a result of observing the Papamochani fast, she was freed from the demon's womb and became a divine Apsara, going to the heavens.
O king! Those who observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast, their entire accumulation of sins is destroyed, and by reading or listening to this, they obtain the fruit of a thousand cow donations. Those who commit murder of a Brahma, steal gold, drink alcohol and commit adultery with their Guru also become free from their sins by observing this fast. This fast is very virtuous.
Worship method of Papamochani Ekadashi
Shri Krishna said to Yudhishthira, "O Rajendra! Listen, I will tell you about the auspicious procedure for this fast. On the excellent day of Dashami in the Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month, take a bath in the morning with devotion using a picture. Then, at noon, eat at one time with a concentrated mind, and sleep on the ground at night. At the end of the night, after a pure morning, perform daily duties and take a bath on the day of Ekadashi. After that, with devotion, recite the following mantra and observe the fast:
"Adya sthitva niraharah sarvabhogavivarjitah
Shavo bhokshye pundarikaksha sharanam me bhavachyut"
"O lotus-eyed Lord, Narayana! Today, I will separate myself from all pleasures and remain without food, and tomorrow I will eat. Achyuta! Please shelter me." After making this vow, worship the Shaligram stone with proper rituals, offer donations to Brahmins, and arrange for their meals. Then, in the night, worship Lord Hari Kesha (another name for Lord Vishnu) with incense and fragrances, staying awake near Him. After that, on the morning of Dwadashi (the twelfth day), once again worship Lord Hari with devotion.
