Amalaki Ekadashi

The Significance of Aamalki Ekadashi in the month of Falgun during the bright fortnight ;(Between February and March )-

Yudhishthira asked Lord Sri Krishna, "Please tell me the name and significance of the Ekadashi in the month of Falgun during the bright fortnight."

Lord Sri Krishna replied, "Listen, Dharmaraja (a form of Yudhishthira). I will tell you about an incident that occurred when King Mandhata asked the great sage Vasistha the same question. The name of the Ekadashi in the month of Falgun during the bright fortnight is Aamalki Ekadashi, and observing this sacred fast brings one closer to the abode of Lord Vishnu. Mandhata asked, "When did Aamalki Ekadashi originate? Please tell me."

The story of Amalaki Ekadashi

Vashishtha said, "Amla is a great tree that destroys all sins. It manifested from a drop of saliva that fell from the mouth of Lord Vishnu, like the moon's revolution, onto the earth. From that very spot, the great Amla tree was born. It is known as the origin of all trees. At the same time, to create all living beings, Lord Brahma was created by the Lord. From him, all creatures were born - gods, demons, celestial beings, yakshas, rakshasas, nagas, and the pure-hearted great sages. While the gods and sages arrived at the place where the beloved Amla tree of Vishnu was, they began to look at the tree and ponder over it. All the other trees are familiar to us, but we do not know this tree. Seeing them worried, a voice from the sky was heard 'Great sages, this is the best Amla tree, which is dear to Vishnu. By remembering it alone, one obtains the fruit of cow donation. By touching it, one gets twice the benefit, and by eating its fruit, one obtains three times the merit.' In its root resides Vishnu, in its top resides Brahma, in its trunk resides the supreme lord Shiva, in its branches reside the sages, in its twigs reside the gods, in its leaves reside the Vasus, in its flowers reside the Maruts, and in its fruits reside all the Prajapatis."

Rishi said, "O Lord, if You are pleased, please tell us about a fast that can provide us with the fruits of heaven and salvation for the benefit of all."

Vishnu said, "If there is a Dwadashi (twelfth day) with the Pushya Nakshatra (constellation) in the bright half of the month of Falgun (February-March), it is a great source of merit and destroys all major sins. Listen to the proper method of performing this fast as I describe it to you." Bhagwan Vishnu continued, "Perform this fast with utmost devotion and you will receive the same merits as those gained from visiting all holy places and giving various types of charity. All these fruits are easily attainable by following this fast according to its prescribed method."

Vashistha said, "After saying this, Lord Devashwar Bhagwan (Vishnu) disappeared. Afterwards, all the sages strictly observed this fast. Therefore, you should also observe this fast in the same manner." The merit obtained from the complete pilgrimage and the fruit obtained from all kinds of donations are easily obtained by following the appropriate methods. Sage Vashishta said, "Your Majesty, having said this, Lord Devashwar Bhagwan Vishnu disappeared." After that, all the great sages observed the aforementioned vow completely. Similarly, you should also observe this vow.
