Atla Tadde

Indian culture and traditions are filled with various festivals and celebrations that bring enthusiasm and a sense of togetherness into life. One such beautiful and significant festival is 'Atla Tadde,' celebrated by married women in Andhra Pradesh for the health and long life of their husbands. This festival is observed three days after the full moon in the Telugu calendar month of Aswiyuja, which falls in September or October in the Gregorian calendar. It is similar to the Karva Chauth fast observed by women in North India.

During this festival, women and young girls observing the fast wake up early before sunrise to prepare traditional dishes made from rice and coconut. These traditional dishes help sustain energy throughout the day and maintain the sanctity of the festival. Throughout the day, women and children sing the traditional songs of Atla Tadde and enjoy swinging, which is a highlight of the festival. Women adorn themselves with special attire, apply henna on their hands, and visit the temple for worship.

After fasting without water all day, the moon is worshiped in the evening when it appears. A proper ritual is performed to worship the moon, and 11 dosas along with a sweet dish made from rice are offered as part of the offering. After the worship, women break their fast and partake in the sacred offerings.

Puja Rituals

There is no specific ritual for the Atla Tadde puja; rather, this festival is celebrated according to traditional customs. At the start of the puja, women prepare a kalash (sacred pot), which is filled with rice and coins and placed at the worship site. Following this, Lord Ganesha is invoked to remove all obstacles. During the puja, women recite the Gauri Ashtotram to seek the blessings of the Goddess. Finally, after the moonrise, they perform the worship of the moon, completing the ritual.

Significance of the Festival

Atla Tadde is a symbol of love and devotion between husband and wife. This festival is associated with the wish for the prosperity and well-being of the family. On this day, women pray for their husbands' health and long life. The festival not only strengthens personal relationships but also promotes a sense of community and mutual support in society.
