Thai Pusam

"Thai Pusam" is an important festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as in other countries. This festival is observed on the full moon day of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar, which falls in the spring season. The Tamil community celebrates this festival with great enthusiasm.

The primary purpose of Thai Pusam is to worship Lord Murugan (Karthikeya). According to mythology, on this day, Lord Murugan, along with other deities, defeated the evil demon Surapadman. This festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and people worship Lord Murugan through prayers, rituals, and devotional songs.

During Thai Pusam, temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala decorate the idols of Lord Murugan in a special way and perform elaborate rituals and ceremonies. People undertake pilgrimages, practice meditation and penance, and participate in chariot processions. This festival lasts for ten days, and during this time, devotees observe fasts and engage in various forms of worship.

Thai Pusam is an occasion when people wear colorful attire, chew betel leaves (tambul), and enjoy Tamil music and dance performances. Thousands of devotees undertake a pilgrimage to the Palani Murugan Temple in western Tamil Nadu during this festival.
