Sharda Puja

On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, when homes are adorned with the worship of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi, there is also a special ritual for the worship of Mata Sharada, who is also known as Maa Saraswati. This is considered extremely auspicious, as Mata Sharada is revered as the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, and learning. Her worship on Diwali not only brings blessings of material prosperity but also enhances knowledge and discernment in life. This day is particularly significant for students, as the grace of Maa Saraswati leads to success in education and mental peace.

The significance of Sharada Puja is also immensely important for traders. In states like Gujarat, this day marks the beginning of 'Chopda,' or new account books. It is believed that worshiping Lord Ganesh, Goddess Laxmi, and Goddess Saraswati together not only brings wealth and prosperity but also bestows wisdom and intelligence in business. By worshiping Mata Sharada alongside Laxmi, Ganesh, and Kuber on Diwali, one receives a complete blessing of prosperity and knowledge, paving the way for both balance and success in life.

Sharada Puja Procedure

On Diwali, Sharada Puja is organized in homes, offices, or business establishments, and it is simple yet highly effective. The worship begins with the installation of an idol or image of Maa Saraswati on a clean platform covered with a white cloth, as the colour white symbolizes knowledge and peace. The worship materials include incense, lamps, white flowers, fruits, sweets, and lotus flowers, and a lamp filled with pure ghee is lit while conch shells and bells are rung.

To please Maa Saraswati, devotees recite the Saraswati Vandana. All students place their books and writing materials at the worship site during the puja, ensuring that Maa Saraswati’s blessings remain upon them. During the worship, devotees pray to Maa Saraswati for wisdom, discernment, and guidance in their lives.

Importance of Sharada Puja

Diwali, the festival of lights and joy, is a celebration of all aspects of prosperity and happiness in life. On this auspicious occasion, along with the worship of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi, the worship of Devi Sharada or Mata Saraswati is also performed with due reverence.

In our Sanatan tradition, Mata Lakshmi is regarded as the goddess of wealth and prosperity, while Mata Sharada is worshipped as the goddess of wisdom and discernment. Wealth is not merely a means of comfort and prosperity; it is essential to have wisdom and discernment for its proper use and preservation.

Therefore, devotees pray to Maa Lakshmi for the attainment of wealth and prosperity, followed by the worship of Mata Sharada, seeking wisdom and discernment from her. This day is particularly significant for students, who worship Devi Saraswati, receiving blessings for excellence in education and studies.
