Narmada Jayanti

Every year, on the seventh day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the month of Magha, Narmada Jayanti is celebrated. On this day, the Narmada River is worshipped. The literal meaning of Narmada is "Harshadayani," which means one who brings joy and happiness. Devotees who worship the Narmada River on this day are blessed with peace and prosperity throughout their lives.

The uniqueness of the Narmada River: -

This is the only river in the world that is circumnavigated because every ghat along its banks is considered sacred, and many sages, including Maharishi Markandeya, Agastya, Maharishi Kapila, and several other sages, performed penance here. Flowing through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, the Narmada River holds religious and cultural significance, which is why it is revered as sacred and worshipped as "Mata Narmada."

This Jayanti is celebrated to highlight the significance of the Narmada River and also provides people with the opportunity to visit the sacred places of Mata Narmada in her honor. On this day, people visit the banks of the Narmada River, perform rituals, and seek the blessings of Mata Narmada. During Narmada Jayanti, many places host religious programs, devotional songs, processions, and rallies.

The descent of the Narmada River: -

The event of the Narmada River's descent is mentioned in the Puranas. One such account is found in the Reva Kanda of the Skanda Purana. Yudhishthira asked Maharishi Markandeya, "Please tell me how the Narmada River descended to this mortal world." In response to Yudhishthira's question, Markandeya narrated that there was a great and illustrious king named Purukutsa, born in a Kshatriya family. He devoted himself to the worship of Mahadeva for a thousand years. Pleased with his penance, Mahadeva asked, "O King, what boon do you desire?"

The king said, "Lord, there is a highly sacred river named Narmada. Please grace this earth with its presence." Mahadeva replied, "O King, ask for another boon instead of this." Hearing this, the great Kshatriya Purukutsa fell unconscious to the ground. Seeing this, Shiva said, "O King, you will recover. I will send the best of rivers, Narmada, to the mortal world."

Following Mahadeva's instructions, the mountain named Paryanka accepted the flow of the great river Narmada. The river, accompanied by the king and deities, flowed swiftly to the summit of the Paryanka mountain, where in ancient times, King Prithu had performed the Ashvamedha Yajna. The great river Narmada originated from the root of a bamboo. At that time, all the deities, demons, and sages worshipped the river, sought refuge, and said, "Today our lives have been fulfilled; please touch us with your divine presence so that we may all be purified.

Mother Narmada said, "I am still a virgin and have no husband, so I cannot touch the deities." The deities replied, "The one who has made you manifest on this earthly plane is the one worthy of being your husband. In ancient times, due to a curse from Lord Brahma, the ocean came to the mortal world and was reborn as King Purukutsa. This divine Kshatriya, Purukutsa, is the most suitable partner for you." Upon hearing this, Mother Narmada accepted Purukutsa as her husband.

King Purukutsa said, "Narmada, you are a goddess. Please bless me so that my ancestors may attain heaven and I may gain great fame.

Narmada said, "O King, so be it. Whatever you wish from me, you will receive as my blessing." Saying this, Goddess Narmada departed from the Paryanka mountain and proceeded westward. She flowed with the speed of an arrow released from a bow, piercing through the earth and breaking the mountain peaks as she moved. Wherever she passed through the Vindhya Mountain region, it became a place for bathing.

The significance of the Narmada River: -

Rivers are our lifeblood, as life is impossible without water. Since ancient times, we have had a deep connection with rivers. The waters of these rivers not only produce crops, but they have also given birth to many civilizations in our country and continue to nurture them to this day. Even today, many of our country's largest cities are situated along the banks of these rivers. Most of our civilization and culture have flourished along riverbanks, which is why our culture regards these rivers as forms of deities.

In ancient times, people depended on the waters of these rivers for drinking, bathing, and other needs. However, in today's world, people have become reliant on tube wells, wells, and other sources for these needs. Yet, we must not forget that the water in tube wells and wells still comes from these rivers. Therefore, we must keep these rivers clean. If we do not become aware of the need to keep our rivers clean and do not take the initiative ourselves, we will lose this precious treasure given to us by nature, making it difficult for all living beings on Earth to sustain their lives.
