Dussehra festival is celebrated with great pomp and joy all over the country but it is celebrated in Karnataka near Bengaluru in Mysore city in a whole different form, the festival of Vijayadashami, celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month, has a different charm. This festival is famous by the name of Mysore Dussehra. Mysore Dussehra is celebrated every year as a symbol of the victory of good over evil because Goddess Durga had killed the demon Mahishasura on this day and this festival is celebrated to celebrate the killing of that terrible demon. Chamundeshwari form of Goddess Durga is worshiped on this festival. According to religious belief, it is said that Chamundeshwari Devi (Maa Durga) had killed the buffalo-headed demon (Mahishasur). Since then this festival started being celebrated. This festival continues for nine days. Maa Durga is worshiped with full devotion for nine days and on the tenth day, a grand worship of Maa Chamundeshwari is done. On this day, big celebrations, tableaux and leelas of Mata are organised. After worshiping, immersion of Maa Durga (Chamundeshwari) is done. Maa Durga is pleased with the worship of the devotees and provides all the happiness and royal respect to the devotees. Poverty alone is not the cause of sorrow, healthy body, illusion, son, wealth and all kinds of enjoyments are obtained with the blessings of mata.

Dussehra procession

This festival starts from the day of Navratri. After worshiping various forms of Goddess Durga for nine days, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp on the tenth day. On the occasion of Vijayadashami, all the devotees take out procession on the streets of Mysore. Decorated elephants and camels are included in the procession. These decorated elephants and camels look so attractive and beautiful that people shower flowers on them. All the devotees walk in this procession with dance, music and making various kinds of noises. On this day everyone's eyes are fixed on the darshan of Chamundeshwari Maa riding on the elephant. There is a 750 kg ' Howda' made for the Mata's throne, which is a wonderful example of the workmanship of the artisans of Mysore. The idol of Maa Chamundeshwari is placed on the throne and placed on top of Gajraj (Elephant) and they tour the cities. It is known as Jambu Sawari. Other elephants also walk with them in fully decorated clothes. A huge crowd is seen gathering in this procession. Happiness is seen blooming in everyone's heart.

History of Mysore Dussehra 

Dussehra of Mysore is famous all over the world because preparations are done very well on this festival and this festival is celebrated in a grand manner. The celebration of this festival continues for about ten days. On this festival of Dussehra, Mysore is decorated with colorful lights. The history of Dussehra in Mysore is linked to the history of Mysore city. Which begins from the time of the unique Vijaynagar Empire of medieval South India. This approximately 600 years old festival was named Dussehra by the popular ruler Krishnaraj Wadiyar of the Wadiyar dynasty . Mysore Dussehra started from the Chamundeshwari Devi temple in Mysore. On this day, the hills of Chamundeshwari Devi are decorated with about 1-1.5 lakh bulbs and the temple of Chamundeshwari Devi is decorated with 80-90 thousand bulbs. The night of Vijayadashami appears very beautiful and sparkling with lights .
