Masik (monthly) Karthigai is a major festival celebrated in South India. This festival is celebrated on the same day in every month when Karthigai Nakshatra is strong, but according to the Tamil calendar, when Karthigai Nakshatra is strong, which falls between November and December according to the Indian calendar. On that day this festival is mainly celebrated as Karthigai Deepam. On this day, Lord Shiva and his son Murugan are worshipped according to rituals. It is believed that on the day of Karthigai festival, Lord Shiva transformed himself into the form of light, hence on this festival, worship is offered to the luminous form of Lord Shiva. Additionally, worshipping Lord Kartikeya on this day endows devotees with strength, courage, and patience. On this occasion, special prayers and rituals are performed in all temples in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, in the Arunachaleshwara Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, grand celebrations are organized for the Karthigai Deepam festival. On this day, millions of devotees gather at the Arunachaleshwara Temple and light a massive lamp. This enormous lamp is called the Mahadeepam. It is considered a symbol of Lord Shiva's luminous form. In South India, this festival is celebrated similar to Diwali. On this day, everyone decorates their homes with Kolam, which are colorful rangoli designs, during the day, and celebrates by lighting clay lamps in the evening. The festival is also known as the Festival of Lights because on that day, it is believed that Lord Shiva manifested as the pillar of fire (Agni Stambha) to resolve a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu. Therefore, people worship this manifestation of Lord Shiva by lighting lamps.

Method of worship

On this day, first thing in the morning, withdraw from regular activities and perform daily rituals. Pay homage to Lord Shiva while focusing on his form and take his blessings. Make a vow to observe fasts. Worship Lord Shiva and Kartikeya (Murugan) according to your customs with fruits, flowers, bhang, datura, incense, lamps, and other offerings. After the Aarti, wish for happiness, prosperity, and well-being for the family. Keep fast throughout the day and break it with a light meal after the evening worship.
