In the Dwapar era, Mathura was ruled by King Ugrasen. His son's name was Kansa. Kansa was ruthless. Due to his cruelty, Kansa forcefully snatched the throne from his father Ugrasen, and imprisoned him. After capturing his father, Kansa declared himself the king of Mathura.
After some time, Kansa's cousin Devaki got married to Vasudeva. When Devaki was about to go, Kansa himself started driving the chariot to please his cousin. When Kansa was going on a chariot, at the same time a voice from the sky (Akashvani) – O Kansa! The eighth child of the sister whom you are giving farewell with great love will kill you.
Kansa, who was a great sinner whose wickedness knew no bounds, became furious with anger the moment he heard the voice of the sky. Kansa was not only an extremely sinful person but had also become shameless while sinning. He immediately took out his sword, grabbed the hair of his sister Devaki and got ready to kill her. Kansa thought that if he kill Devaki, he will not have a son. Nor will anyone be able to kill me. Seeing Kansa very angry, Vasudev ji explained to Kansa that you have no fear of Devaki nor will Devaki be able to harm you, you should not punish her. According to Akashvani, you are afraid of the eighth son of Devaki, hence I promise you that I will hand over my eighth child to you, Kansa agreed to Vasudev ji but still his fear did not go away, so he put Vasudev and Devaki in prison. Kansa mercilessly killed all the children born from Devaki's womb.
Lord Shri Krishna was born as the eighth child of Devaki. When Lord Shri Krishna born, the prison cell shone with a divine radiance. Seeing that brightness, Devaki and Vasudev became extremely frightened. At the same time, Lord Vishnu appeared in his four-armed form infront of Vasudev and Devaki. After giving darshan, Lord Vishnu told Vasudev ji to send me to Gokul immediately. Take me to Nand's house and bring the girl born in Nand’s house and hand it over to Kansa. As soon as Vasudev ji was taken out of the prison as per the wish of the deity, the doors of the prison started opening on their own. When Kansa came to know that Devaki had given birth to a child, he immediately came to kill her because he was thinking that this time his Kaal (death) has been born. As soon as Kansa snatched the girl from Devaki and tried to kill her, the girl escaped from Kansa's hands and took the form of a Goddess and said - Hey ! Evil soul Kansa, you are a grave sinner and your end is soon, the one who will kill you has taken birth on this earth, now you stop killing innocent children. Saying this to Kansa, the deities disappeared from there. Seeing such a scene, Kansa became distraught with fear. He started apologizing to his sister Devaki and Vasudev ji. Hearing his compassionate words and seeing his repentance, Vasudev ji and Devaki ji forgave him and then Kansa also freed him from prison.

The puja of Krishna Janam Utsav takes place at midnight. In some places of India, Lord Shri Krishna is born by cutting the stem of a cucumber at midnight in the night. This is just like when a baby is born, its umbilical cord is separated from the mother's uterus. If you wish, you can celebrate his arrival without doing this process. Clean the place of worship, sprinkle Ganga water, purify the place, and decorate it. After that, after saluting the sun, wind, land, sky, etc., sit facing east or north. Spread a clean white cloth on a platform and install the idol of Laddu Gopal (made of any metal) on it. Keep the items used in the puja thali like kumkum, sandalwood, incense, aarti lamp, water, and flowers. As Prasad, keep Panchamrit, Panjiri, coconut sweets, fruits, or any other Prasad as per wish in a plate. After the birth of Krishna, first of all, Laddu Gopal should be bathed with honey, ghee, sugar, milk, curd, dry fruits, and then with Ganga water. After this, apply sandalwood tilak on Laddu Gopal's forehead and dress him in clean clothes, decorate him with a crown and flute. Perform their Aarti and offer food as per their wish and distribute it among the family members as Prasad. If you have kept a fast then you can have food at night and offer that also to Laddu Gopal.
