Learn how the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga came into existence. What is the significance of this Jyotirlinga?

Kedarnath Temple, situated at an altitude of approximately 3584 meters above sea level, is nestled in the heights of Uttarakhand. This magnificent heritage lies amidst the snow-covered Himalayan Mountain ranges, in the northern part of the Rudra Prayag district. In ancient times, it was also known as "Kedar Khand." Kedarnath Temple is renowned as the fifth Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas in India, which is specially illuminated by the grace of Lord Shiva.

The glory of the Kedareswar Jyotirlinga has been described repeatedly in the Puranas and scriptures, and the natural beauty and spiritual atmosphere here deeply attract us towards religion and spirituality.

Kedarnath Jyotirlinga's Emergence and Its Significance:

According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Vishnu's avatars, Nar and Narayana, used to perform penance at Badrikashram. They made a Shiva Lingam from the soil and worshipped it there, offering their devotion to Lord Shiva. Being devoted to his devotees, Lord Shiva resided in the clay Shiva Lingam made daily with love by Nar and Narayana. Many days passed as they worshipped Lord Shiva.

Pleased with their loving devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before them and said, I am very pleased with your devotion. You both deserve a boon, so ask me for one.

Nar and Narayana, thinking of the welfare of the people, said to Lord Shiva, "Lord! If you are pleased and wish to grant us a boon, then please stay here in your form and accept worship forever."

Upon their request, the benevolent Lord Shiva manifested Himself as a Jyotirlinga at the sacred Kedarnath in the Himalayas.

Worshipped by both Nar and Narayana, Lord Shiva dispels sorrow and fear from people's lives. He appears before His devotees and listens to their prayers. Since that day, anyone who worships Lord Kedarnath with devotion does not experience sorrow even in their dreams.

Those who offer a bracelet (kada) inscribed with the form of Shiva near the Shivling, a symbol of their devotion to Lord Shiva, are freed from all sins and attain liberation in life. Similarly, those who undertake a pilgrimage to Badrinath also achieve liberation.

It is certain that by having the darshan of Nar, Narayana, and Kedareshwar Shiva, one attains moksha (liberation).

Devotees of Kedarnath who undertake the pilgrimage to this holy site are granted liberation even if they pass away before reaching the destination.

When a person arrives at the Kedarnath pilgrimage site and worships Kedareshwar with love, they are not reborn thereafter.
