Independence Day is celebrated every year in India on the 15th of August because it is the same day our country broke the chains of slavery and gained independence. India gained independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. Our country was bound by the chains of slavery for about 700 years, in which the British ruled India for about 200 years. After many years of tireless struggle by the people of India, non-violent resistance, and sacrifices of many freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, and many other leaders, our country got the opportunity of independence. These leaders carried out many movements to liberate India.

People celebrate Independence Day with great enthusiasm all over India. This day is celebrated all over the country. On this day, flags are hoisted in schools, colleges, offices, and public places, along with the national anthem, singing, competitions, and speeches on various movements and freedom fighters, etc. are conducted. The Prime Minister of India hoists the flag on this day, reflecting the country's progress and goals. On 15 August 1947, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and declared India an independent nation.

Importance of Independence Day

The main reason for celebrating Independence Day is that it is the day on which due to the tireless efforts of the freedom fighters of our country, we were freed from slavery and bondage and were also successful in starting a new life independently. Independence Day plays an important role in making every Indian remember the sacrifice and struggle of freedom fighters as well as awakening the feeling of patriotism. On this day, various programs are organized which reflect the cultures, traditions and specialties of different states of our country. Independence Day is such a wonderful day on which every citizen of our country feels proud and excited.

Rules for hoisting the flag on Independence Day

15th August i.e. Independence Day, Indian citizens hoist the flag with great enthusiasm at all the offices, schools and other government institutions in our country, but there are some special rules for flag hoisting. It is the ultimate duty of all of us Indians that we should always hoist the flag keeping the rules in mind. Also, we should take special care that the flag should always be hoisted after sunrise and should be taken down before sunset . Before hoisting the tricolor, some things related to the tricolor should be kept in mind which are as follows -

• The Tricolor i.e. the flag should be hoisted at such a place from where the Tricolor can be seen by everyone.

• It is important to keep in mind that the tricolor should not be mutilated or dirty anywhere.

• The shape of the flag should always be rectangular and the ratio should be 3:2.

• There should be Ashoka Chakra in the middle of the flag and it should be kept in mind that Ashoka Chakra should have 24 spokes.

• While hoisting the flag, it should be kept in mind that the tricolor should never touch the ground.
