In Sanatan Dharma, the success of every ritual depends on its proper beginning, and for this, the thought of Shubh Muhurat (auspicious timing) is considered most important. This principle becomes even more significant when it comes to the worship of deities. Speaking of the worship of Lord Shiva, His rules and methods have been regarded as highly powerful and mystical since ancient times. One such very important spiritual rule is considered Shiva Vaas.
Shiva Vaas is not merely an astrological calculation, but it is an ancient method that reveals whether Lord Shiva is currently residing in His abode and in which direction He is dwelling. This is considered essential because, based on it, the results of worship and penance are determined.
In this article, we will understand the deeper meaning of Shiva Vaas, the subtle calculation method, and its exceptional significance in Shiva worship so that your worship may be successful.
What is Shiva Vaas and Its Significance?
In simple words, Shiva Vaas means the place of residence of Lord Shiva. It is an astrological calculation that indicates in which direction Lord Shiva is present on any given day. This knowledge is extremely important because the position of His residence has a unique impact. If His worship is performed at a time when He is residing in a certain direction, then instead of positive results, negative outcomes may occur.
The main importance of Shiva Vaas lies in the fact that it gives us an opportunity to connect directly with the energy of Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva resides in the north, He is with Mother Parvati. At such times, prayers are more fruitful and beneficial. That is why it is considered one of the most important practices to first calculate Shiva Vaas before worship. Without following it, no worship is fully accepted, and its results may remain incomplete.
On the contrary, if Lord Shiva is considered to be in another direction at the time of any ritual, such as cooking, eating, or completing daily tasks, then this is not seen as favorable. It is believed that doing so may bring obstacles or unnecessary troubles into one’s life.
Therefore, it is considered most important to calculate Shiva Vaas before beginning any ritual, so that worship may be performed at the right time and reach Lord Shiva successfully.
How to Calculate Shiva Vaas?
The method of calculating Shiva Vaas depends on the Tithi (lunar date) and the Paksha (fortnight – Krishna Paksha or Shukla Paksha).
1. Shukla Paksha (From Amavasya to Purnima)
If you want to perform Rudrabhishek on any Tithi of Shukla Paksha, then follow this method:
• First, take the number of the Tithi on which you want to perform the worship.
• Multiply this number by 2.
• Now, add 5 to the result.
• Divide the obtained number by 7.
• The remainder after division will determine the Shiva Vaas.
2. Krishna Paksha (From Purnima to Amavasya)
If you want to perform Rudrabhishek on any Tithi of Krishna Paksha, then follow this method:
• First, add 15 to the number of the current Tithi of Krishna Paksha (+15).
• Multiply this number by 2.
• Add 5 to the result (+5).
• Then, divide the obtained number by 7 (÷7).
• The remainder after division will determine the Shiva Vaas.
Know the Results of Shiva Vaas According to the Remainder
After calculation, you will get a remainder between 1 to 7. Each remainder has its own special significance:
Auspicious Remainders
• Remainder 1 — Mount Kailash (in a joyful posture)
Performing puja at this time brings complete happiness, peace, and fulfillment of all wishes.
• Remainder 2 — With Goddess Gauri (beside Mata Parvati)
Puja during this period grants prosperity, wealth, and the special blessings of the divine.
• Remainder 3 — Riding on Nandi (in a delighted posture)
Worship at this time fulfills all desires and ensures success in endeavors.
Inauspicious Remainders
• Remainder 4 — In an Assembly (absorbed in discussions)
Performing Rudrabhishek or worship at this time may bring mental unrest, sorrow, and distress.
• Remainder 5 — While Eating
Puja during this state displeases Lord Shiva and may lead to difficulties and obstacles.
• Remainder 6 — While Playing (engaged in recreation)
Worship at this time can result in defeat, loss, and sadness.
• Remainder 7 — In a Cremation Ground (amid destructive forces)
Performing puja in this state is considered highly inauspicious and can lead to severe misfortune, even death-like suffering.
Special Note: Remainder 1, 2, and 3 indicate that Shiva Vaas is at auspicious places. At these times, Rudrabhishek and other rituals can be performed, and the results will be favorable.
Whereas, remainders 4, 5, 6, and 7 are considered inauspicious, and worship should be avoided on these days.
When is it Not Necessary to Check Shiva Vaas?
On certain special days, there is no need to check Shiva Vaas. These days are considered auspicious in themselves, and any worship performed on such days always brings positive results.
• Mahashivratri: This is the greatest festival of Lord Shiva, and on this day, worship holds special significance.
• Shravan Month (Sawan): The entire month of Shravan is dedicated to the devotion of Lord Shiva. During this holy month, worship of Lord Shiva is always considered auspicious at any time.
Thus by calculating Shiva Vaas and performing rituals like Rudrabhishek at the right time, one receives Lord Shiva’s divine blessings and grace, ensuring that the worship becomes successful.
