wife and son and even himself. Though being virtuous, he had to work at a cremation ground under a chandal (outcaste). Even after such misery, truthful Harishchandra did not waver from the path of righteousness. He kept serving the chandal with full honesty and suffered for many years.

One day, the king was deeply worried and distressed. He kept thinking — what should I do? Why is my fate like this? Why is there so much sorrow? Lost in thought, he reached the seashore. At that moment, the great sage Gautam appeared. Seeing the king in distress, the
compassionate sage asked him the reason for his sorrow. The king narrated everything. earing it all, sage Gautam said, “O king! Just a few days from now
comes a sacred fast named Aja Ekadashi, which can grant immense virtue. If you observe it with devotion, your sins will be destroyed and you will be reunited with your wife, son, and kingdom.” The sage added, “This fast, which falls in the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, destroys even the gravest sins. You should observe this fast faithfully.”

The king observed the fast as instructed by the sage. By the effect of this vrat, all his sins were destroyed. He regained his kingdom, reunited with his wife and son, and attained great joy in life.
